Throttle/gas pedal linkage.
Having a problem with the throttle/gas pedal linkage on my 56 Fairlane. It is a 292 with the Holley 4bbl. Depressing the gas pedal doesn't allow full throttle. Something seems to bind. Looks like a lot of bracket/springs/linkage on this thing! Any particular areas that tend to stick and cause an issue? I realize this is a vague question but just thought I would throw it out there. This site has been a big help with this car and a Model A I have been working on.

Re: Throttle/gas pedal linkage.
If it's an auto, there's some adjustment in the "bell crank" or whatever you call it for the kick down rod. I think someone posted this and the adjustment over at yblocksforever not too long ago. Might help.

Re: Throttle/gas pedal linkage.
One of the first easy things to check is the pedal on the floor.
Where the rod thru the firewall attaches to the pedal may be worn and off center, the pedal mounting can be crooked (or have a small rock behind it) and not allow full movement. |

Re: Throttle/gas pedal linkage.
That what was wrong with mine, the pedal wasn't straight where it fastened to floor, pedal was also bent, replaced the pedal and fastened to floor works great

Re: Throttle/gas pedal linkage.
There is an adjustment turnbuckle like arrangement that adjusts the gas pedal. It usually points almost straight up and the adjustment is held by a locking nut. These usually don't need adjustment as the nut holds everything pretty secure. but you never know.
Look in the shop manual for adjustment or the FOM manual. I also found how to adjust in a Motor's manual.

On the chance that it's something else, it might be possible the linkage wasn't altered/adjusted (as needed) for the carb that's on the engine. . Last edited by dmsfrr; 09-03-2016 at 12:58 PM. Reason: add photo |

Re: Throttle/gas pedal linkage.
The carb is original style holley teapot. Seems like the angle that the pedal is pushing the rod is off. Was having trouble getting the pedal bolts back in the floor after putting in a new carpet. At first I suspected the grommet was in the wrong spot and the rod couldn't move as it should but that doesn't seem to be it. I get confused when I look at all the linkage underneath.

If the hole in the back of the pedal for the rod end is worn out, the rod won't be held in place correctly. Confused by the linkage? Except for the flashlight, does yours look anything like this? Me too. That's why paul2748 suggested the info from the shop manual. It's possible.... if you have correct instructions. Try the sites at this link... https://www.google.com/search?q=1956...utf-8&oe=utf-8 . Last edited by dmsfrr; 09-04-2016 at 04:50 PM. |
