39 Front Shocks
Folks,
Just wondering if anyone is using Speedway Motors front tube shock kit? I see it has the wishbone to axle pinch bolts. I am replacing the front axle on my 39 Couple cause the king pin hole is oval now and of coarse I effed the threads on the stock pinch bolts, so I thought now would be the time to replace the stock shocks. Anyone with experience and info with these would be greatly appreciated. The axle I’m going to install is original and in great shape, so I was also wondering what shock would work best. Thanks Tom |

Re: 39 Front Shocks
Shoovel , when I purchased our 39’ Deluxe, it had a Pete & Jake’s front tube shock kit on it. Seems to work well. Rear has a Bob Drake tube shock kit. That I am not fond of.
However, I would like some day to upgrade the 4 shocks. I don’t believe these kits come with the best shocks. Pete & Jake’s. Part #5001 Stretch |

I’ve seen those type, but I’m going to need new perchs anyway, that’s why I’m looking at the other kit. Tom |

Re: 39 Front Shocks
I had a tube shock kit on my '38. Like you, I found the shocks lacking. I bought some KYB shocks for the front. Before long, the bracket that bolts to the frame for the upper shock mount broke. A stiffer shock places a lot of stress at the bolt-on location on the frame. I then installed a set of rebuilt shocks by Andy Falandes and haven't looked back.

Andy is highly regarded as the best on rebuilding the old Ford shocks. I've never seen a complaint with his work. |

Re: 39 Front Shocks
I'm talking about the original type shocks, but they are not mechanical. They are lever action hydraulics. You can pick up used shocks for cores fairly inexpensively, or Any has cores to rebuild, I think. Email him and give him your car info and he will respond.
You might not want to convert back to originals. I was just giving you my experience with installing upgraded shocks on the airplane type conversion I had. |

Re: 39 Front Shocks
My two cents. My father may or may not have changed the front shocks. However, someone did and must have put a tube shock kit on the front. When I was doing my restoration, I decided to keep the tube shocks on the front and rebuilt the Houdaille shocks on the back. With the number of springs in the cross members, I am not sure that the shocks make much difference. However, I kept everything the same as this is what I had learned to drive on. I have thought of trying to find the front Houdaille shocks for the front, but have not pursued that yet.
