Default Kelsey's and hydraulic brakes.

I have been told that you need hydraulic drums with the hub outboard and drum inboard if your going to run wire wheels. Since my '35 rear axle came with wires, why would I need to swap rear drums if I put '48 hydraulic backing plates on with my bent spoke Kelseys?

Do not know who told you that....retain your original '35 drums, use the '48 back plates, and you are good to go. FYI....the '35 drum is the only year that the drums are for wire wheels and have the 1 3/4" wide linings, just like the '48. Robert

Always a great way to start a question. I have a hydraulic brake rear that works well with '35 drums but the front didn't seem to like the offset of the '35-'36 spindles until I slipped on some '39-'40 Lincoln deep offset brakes. Didn't finish the job because a change of plans included some wider wheels for radials and the spokes were not part of the plan. We've all been told a lot of things but when it comes to old fords the variations can become confusing. There are several ways to get where you want, but they may seem odd.

As for the Kelseys and the post war drums. There is often some grinding or fitting needed. Usually better to start with the '40-42 drums which need the spacer ring to support the inside of the wire wheel. The need for the ring is why the '35 drum is recommended and they can be cheap. Good Luck: Fred A
