Default 35 Transmission Main (rear) shaft

Assembling a 35 transmission and have a question about some "notches" in the spiral teeth behind the spacer. see pictures
I am looking at a picture in a old Ford & Mercury Workshop Manual 1932 - 48 (Scientific Pub.) that shows teeth very simular to those in the pictures.
The notches look like they are machined that way but I want to be sure before I assemble it.

It's normal and your shaft is 36 - not 35 .

It's not a 36 since that year has a spiral 6-tooth spline with unique corresponding low gear. Looks to be a 1937-early39 to me. Many Ford gears have strange cuts that are made with the gear cutting tools used during manufacture and do no harm.

I note in the first picture the brass bushing looks cracked and should be replaced.

With respect, it is a '36 as the 6-spline shaft and gear were replaced by that shown in the photo as a running change. Both types of shafts and gears carry 68-prefix part numbers, not 78-prefix part numbers.

DavidG is correct. The 16 spiral version continued on into 1939 production. The 6 spiral version was '36 only. The notches are actually there to provide a way to slide the hidden lock key for 2nd gear backward....this is needed in order to release 2nd gear from the mainshaft.
