Default How does this clip go back on?

Putting the pedal assembly back together on grandpas Merc and it seems to me there is probably a trick to putting this clip back on. It doesn’t have ears like a regular snap ring, but was going to try snap ring pliers when I get back home. Thanks fellas if you have the answer.

Start with one end of the ring into the groove then work the rest of it in.

That clip isn't made of spring steel so working it over the end of the shaft will stretch it.
I have found the best way to install this clip is to place it on the end of the shaft and with a socket of just the correct diameter, hammer it down.
Still, you may need to compress it a bit once in place.

They do make "C' clip pliers, but for one clip I wouldn't spend the money. 51 Merc has the answer.

Place one open end in the grove and work it on moving clockwise or counter clockwise.
Depending on which open end side you put in the grove. Don’t put both open ends in the grove at the same time and push it in the grove ,it will snap the clip.

Same method as putting a tire on a rim.

you need C clip pliers look and behave like circlip pliers but have flat ends any transmission mechanic will have them and be able to tell you where to get then should be available on line or any decent tool store

I drill a small hole on each end of the ring and use snap ring pliers to put those clips on or take them off. Works well every time....especially when you may need to take them off again

As stated just like mounting a tire on a wheel, no wasting time drilling.
Works well every time.
