Default Attempt two at a sacrificial anode

Well, after a long discussion with my partner and a little foray into electrolysis. I have come to the conclusion that my original idea for a sacrificial anode is bad execution of a good idea. In short, the whole thing works by electrolysis, which requires continuity. A chain makes a very poor conductor of electricity and the use of one in this instance, while looking fancy, is a bad idea.

Essentially what I did was replace the chain with a length of 12 gauge stranded wire, soldered to the radiator cap and attached firmly to the anode with a #10 screw. I checked the whole thing out with an ohmmeter, and there is minimal resistance from one end to the other. Hopefully, this will provide a path for the electrons to do their dirty work on the chunk of magnesium instead of my nice aluminum heads.

I got the idea for the chain from a nice looking zinc fish hanging on a chain that someone was selling. I thought it looked real good. As one of the long time H.A.M.B. members says : “In any conflict between Physics and Style, Physics always wins”.

In the maritime industry, it's pretty common to electrify the hull of ships to prevent corrosion.

You might consider a washer and nut on the end of that #10 screw. As the anode melts way, the threads in the anode may also melt.

Good idea. There may be a galvanic reaction between the screw and the anode.

Genuine 'pencil zinc anode'

That's what I was originally considering, but there are no extra openings on the Edmunds heads. Plus I'd like one in each side, since they're kinda small.

Here's another interesting Fordbarn discussion about sacrificial anodes.
