Default Trash Can Condenser price increase

I have gotten to the point where the arthritis in my hands make it difficult for me to continue making my reproduction "Trash Can" Condensers. I have talked to my partner (who is not a car guy) and he has agreed to take over the assembly operation for an additional $20 per unit. That would result in a price increase to $70 for the members here. I know this is a lot, but material costs have increased greatly since I started doing this and there is a lot of hand work involved.

Either that, or I could just shut down the operation for good. Your opinions are valued.

A good reliable product that is available and can be trusted is more important then saving a few dollars in my opinion. Doing what you need to do to make this available at all is appreciated greatly.

Thank you for continuing. All things are experiencing price increases so it should be expected and embraced for a custom service.

Thanks for keeping up the good work and helping provide quality parts. Price increases are to be expected as we see everywhere today, just a fact of life. As long as the quality remains, I see no qualms. So many now adays increase the price but the quality drops at the same time. Keep the quality, and as you may not see quality, rest in the fact you gain continued respect for providing a quality product.

Thank you Tubman!

Can I test drive one for a week? .

Can't be an easy feat to ground up build one. I'm certainly in that market.

Agreed. I've got two in my stash for just the right project. Thank you for making the decision to keep these available.

Sorry to hear about your arthritis. Really sucks when we can't do something that was once so easy.

It seemed like I was spending more time picking dropped components off the floor (which presents it's own problems), than putting things together.

My first full time job was in 1963 at lumberyard. At the customer counter there was a sign overhead:
QUALITY IS REMEMBERED LONG AFTER PRICE IS FORGOTTEN

59 years later I could not agree more! Keep them coming Tubman

Just a saying: You are ignorant just long enough to get the answer to a
question.

What is a trash can condenser? Could you please post a photo of one of
yours?

Thanks, John

"Trash Can" condensers were originally offered by Mallory to be used with their high performance distributors. Their distributors had dual points, the second set of which took up the space that the condenser usually occupied inside the distributor. They were usually made of brass, and the way they were made caused them to resemble miniature trash cans. They have a much better appearance than standard condensers, and being brass, can be polished for and even more striking look. thus, they are quite popular with guys that use vintage dual point and dual coil distributors.

Here are a couple of pictures, the first is of one of mine mounted on an Olds Rocket distributor with a Mallory dual point conversion inside, and the second shows two of them polished mounted on a WH Ducoil, also for an Oldsmobile.

No worries, fellas. We've all been there at some point.
Tubman, is there a reliable why to test an old Mallory unit? I picked up a few flat top dizzies @ Hershey and some of them still had them on the units. Even more surprising, none of the brass cases are cracked.

The original Mallory's were of high quality; most of them test good, even the ones with minor splits. Lately, multi-meters with a capacitor test function have come down in price. I have seen them on Amazon in the twenty dollar range. If you do test them, make sure that you heat cycle them a few times to make sure. The old Mallory's should test in the mid-.30's micro-farad range, while modern capacitors should be in the low-.20's micro-farads. The exact capacitance is not really that important; like Hand Grenades and Horseshoes, close is OK.

Here's one I found with a quick search. https://www.amazon.com/Honeytek-Capa...citor+tester&q

Thanks Tubman, Tim Ayers, and V8Coopman. I see why the name now. I do feel a little
stupid though, I have one, complete dual point distributor with the trash can condenser
that I removed from my 51 Ford 2dr. Now I have to find where I put it in my shop.
