Default Your most useless NOS parts

I think most of us in the hobby accrue NOS parts that in real life we have no need for . I have 4 NOS AA axle shafts for the bevel gear rear end . They still have the "cosmoline bandage" around the gear end . I have owned them for over 35 years and never has anyone require one . But I still keep them of course .I have an AA NOS low ratio ring gear for the worm drive rear end again no takers . Actually this piece is very lovely in its own right gleaming 90 year old brass . In the morning I put my coffee cup in its middle it sits on my table away from my cold garage but the axle shafts have not made it indoors yet .
I do have two trucks with the bevel rear end but I cant see how an axle shaft could fail they are indeed a hefty unit . I have a NOS 28/29 front apron which goes under the rad shell I just replaced the front spring on the 29 AA so had removed its apron less than perfect . I thought if I replace it with the NOS one the instant I start to fit it it would no longer be NOS rather like it loosing its virginity ( maybe I have gotten into this hobby too deep !!!) Just wondered if anybody else has a collection of never to be needed NOS parts that you keep and store anyway .

John in weather was cancelled today Suffolk County England .

NOS parts should be stored properly and protected. If people hadn't stashed away new parts and never needed them in the '20s-'30s we wouldn't be driving Fords today! Someone in the future will be glad to find that unneeded part.

One of the guys in our club had a club project one night to change his clutch. He drives his A a LOT!, so good for him. Anyways he changed his throwout bearing over to lifetime, etc. The arm, the fork, that whole thing... It was grinding all the sudden. I had a few of those assemblies on the shelf from an auction. He brought over a sample of what he needed. I took some parts out of a old trans case I had, some off the shelf, you get the idea. He wanted to pay me, and I forcefully declined. Heck I wasn't using the parts after all those years, he needed them, and HE DRIVES HIS CAR! I was happy to give them to a guy that drives his car.

Besides, he is a WW-II vet. Real nice guy.

I have a 28-29 NOS steering wheel that was made backwards. The little nubs for finger grips that are supposed to be on the back facing the gas tank, are actually on the front and you look at them.

Ronn, I totally agree with you that NOS spark plugs are beautiful. I can't explain it. They just are.

The most useless NOS part that I used to have was a 1928 running board splash apron. I was so happy with the find that I didn't examine it closely. The trough that the running board rides in was not straight. That is the reason that part was NOS. It could never be used as is. That truly is a useless part.

NOS bearings that were wrapped in cosmoline cloth. The cosmoline ate the bearing surface so they are junk, but can't give in and throw them out.

I have a collection of NOS Ford parts including starter switches, spindle bolts, shop "T" wrenches, wheel bearings, drive shaft, tie rod, and others. These parts have no service value, so they are packed away for ???????? I retrospect, spending money for NOS parts was foolish of me.

Service value? Hmmmmm, I'll gladly put into service your NOS wheel bearings and tie rod ends.

Back in the 1980's I was restoring a Model T and snatched up almost any NOS part I could find. Later, I learned that some of it was actually stuff that, while "new," was incorrectly made (bolt holes out of place, etc., casting off center). That is probably why it has survived-the repair man knew it wouldn't work and tossed it into a pile. And along I come decades later......

I have an NOS cluster gear on which they failed to cut the bevels on the second gear section of the cluster. Maybe I can find somebody to take that on.

I was going to post something like that. There is a surprising amount of parts out there that were miss made back in the day by Fords suppliers and should have been recycled from the start, but somehow made it back into the parts stream.

Years ago I was shown a wire loop with about 30 NOS Model T sidelight brackets, Ford script and all, that only fitted the 26/27 New Beauty windscreen setup. The were all for one side only!

For those that have a supply of parts on the shelf, I suggest you get some of those tags with attachment wire and put as much info as possible about the part on it. It will help someone identify the unit correctly in the future. Either you or the auctioneer for your estate.

My most recent useless purchase was a 2020 calendar on which I planned activities for the year. They all got cancelled.

I have not decided if I am going to waste my money on a 2021 calendar yet. I guess I can use it to keep track of doctor's appointments!
