fan belt installation
Is there an easy way to install the fan belt? I rebuilt a generator and installed it on my 29. I purchased a new cogged belt from NAPA (5/8 x 43 PN 25-20426). The generator mount bolt was loosened and the generator rotated in until it touched the block. The belt was slipped over the crank and fan pulleys and then I attempted to work it on to the generator pulley. I was finally able to get the belt on but I was concerned that I'd have to ruin the belt to force it on. Is there some easy way of doing this?

Re: fan belt installation

Re: fan belt installation
I use a 44" belt, generic part number is 5L440. Most auto parts places carry them. Easy to install even wiht a power house generator.

Re: fan belt installation
The pulley on the generator is on a tapered shaft. Take the bolt out that holds the pulley on and it will come off easy. Now you can put the belt on the pulley and then onto the shaft. Should be alot easier this way. Good luck Ron

Thanks for the suggestions. I think Ron's idea to remove the pulley is a good one. I'll check into the longer belt for a spare to carry along the road.

Re: fan belt installation
I used to do this by putting the belt on the crank and generator pulleys and then start the belt on the fan pulley and pull on a fan blade to rotate the belt on.

Re: fan belt installation
Really sounds like the belt is just too small. Never had any trouble .

Re: fan belt installation
Ron's way is the only way I found to get my belt on. Mine is a current aftermarket belt that is suppose to be for an A but they don't fit well.

Re: fan belt installation
Just get a larger belt then the one you have...that way you will not have to take things apart! Just losen up the generator, slip the belt on, then adjust the generator to the proper belt tension...Plain and simple.

Re: fan belt installation
I use a NAPA-B41, it fits well and last for miles. [15,000 PLUS]

Re: fan belt installation
I use the NAPA B41 also. Taking the generator off, fitting the belt in the pulley, and reinstalling the generator also works.

Re: fan belt installation
I agree with those that said just get the next size longer belt. I have never had the problem you are experiencing.

Re: fan belt installation
The 25-20426 belt is one that I went to when I installed an alternator. The alternator pulley is significantly smaller in diameter than the generator pulley, and I had problems with the belt being loose with a standard lenth belt. I think the others are right when they suggest going to a normal size belt, available from any of the parts vendors. Good luck.
