Question 7 Tooth Help

I am rebuilding my 7-tooth steering column and wondering
how the oil seal retainer with tube is installed. The old oil seal retainer

shown in photo 1 had a rubber(?) washer/gasket above it. Photo 2
shows what I received as a gasket set and I am wondering about it.
Where would the 0-ring go? Is there an oil seal that would work with
the new oil seal retainer with the tube? Should I re-use the one in photo 1?

Where’d you get this kit from?

I don't remember where I got the gasket set. The brass
shims are out of my current column.

There is one more gasket that goes on the sector housing.

That’s why I asked, because to my knowledge nobody supplies that set of shims anymore.

I intend to re-use the brass shims. I guess the paper ones are
the only ones supplied now.

Bratton’s sells metal shims, just not the original style of 3 brass ones. Is that O-ring for the sector shaft where it meets the frame?

I guess you are right about the O-ring. From what I read, some machining would
be necessary to use it. I don't plan on using it. I am still wondering if the felt washer needs to be cored out or enlarged to use as an oil seal.

I can't recall if there is a rubber gasket ahead of the tube.... I know that the sector bushings if they are the right ones do not have groves on both sides.

The shims are for taking up the slack between the teeth of steering sector shaft and worm gear at the end of steering column. You want as little play as possible without binding. You install or reduce the number of shims to get the least amount of play between the steering gear and sector shaft. Takes a bit of installing and removing to get this correct. The closer you get these two the less play in the steering wheel. The O ring goes between the sector shaft and the frame. Make sure everything is clean before installing the tube with the nut at the end. A little locktite on the threads of the tube will stop any leaks of oil out of the unit into the light switch.

I have a F100 steering box in my 29 and could not be happier. In my opinion get a 2 tooth or a F100 box and be done with it.

I have seen this illustration, but I didn't notice where it says "Remove and discard the oil seal." I still can't figure out what the felt washers in the gasket kit are for. I seem to have ordered two kits in the past, but so long ago I can't find the invoice and don't know where they came from. One supplier shows a kit that has the paper gaskets and one that looks like the oil seal I removed. I'm guessing I will put everything back together without the added oil seal and just seal the threads on the new oil seal retainer with the tube.

I just discovered that the new oil seal retainer will not fit for me. I didn't check
the inside diameter of the steering shaft. The old retainer will have to do. Maybe the shaft on the column I am removing from my 1929 Coupe will have a different shaft.
