Custom 1939 Ford -- Really!

That's pretty cool, different but I like it. Almost like a cousin to a 60"s ford cobra.

Man Lanny, you beat me to it. '57 MG doors, windshield, trunk lid, rear fenders! And the bulbous '39 fenders glued-onto the front....that thing ain't nothin but plain, hurtin', UGLY! And that front I-beam is all bent to hell with the excessive negative camber on the passenger side. I AIN'T impressed! I gotta wonder how many gallons of Bondo might be schmoozin' those front fender fillets? DD

DD, the front fenders from the side shot, is the worst looking thing about it.

The only comparison to a Cobra, is that they are both cars.

I never mentioned "Cobra"! There's a whole lot of difference between AC Bristol and MG-A, at least to me! DD

Right you are Lanny, that looks very similar. The cobra looks totally different from all angles except for the angle front/side view.

This is a custom '39 that I spent many hours working on (not mine) circa '52-'59 (not an ounce of Bondo)

Not really any 39 Ford content other than the front fenders, lights and wheels.
"Normand started the build with an MGA body, a Ford flathead V8, and a Cobra replica chassis. The MGA body needed significant changes to fit the chassis as it was too narrow, so the rear fenders were modified to better fit the track width and the front end was considerably changed with new fenders and a new front end. This is why the car has such a distinct MGA look to it from the centre back, though admittedly I was way off base with my earlier Cobra windshield guess.

The chassis was fitted with Corvette independent suspension up front and a coilover-sprung Chevrolet S-10 rear axle. It has disc brakes up front and drums on the rear, although front disc brakes aren’t in keeping with the 1930s theme it does make the car safer and easier to drive, particularly in modern traffic.

Adapters were used to fit the period-correct 1939 Ford wheels and the car makes use of 1939 Ford headlights and taillights. Under the hood you’ll find that Flathead V8 which has been mated to a 3-speed manual transmission. Impressively it only took Normand two months to build the car from start to finish, he has years of experience building hot rods and custom cars, and this experience shines through on this build."

I think that those who dislike this vehicle are viewing it more from an early Ford perspective. I can see how they could find fault coming from there. Those of us who like it are seeing it for what it actually is, a well-proportioned home-built special with a hint of something familiar and attractive in its own right.

Initially I would be wondering if it had a 1939 Ford chassis. If so, was it a deluxe set up or a standard. Since it doesn't have either then it's not got much 39 Ford in it. The flathead is kind of heavy but some of the custom bodied sports cars had Ford Motors back in the day. The Allard cars had them and there were others too both before and after the war. The 1936 Jensen-Ford was a nice one.

wheel openings, and the left wheels/tires centered in the wheel openings.
There is quite a difference, wonder if it drives straight

Well the last point I have about this thread is the guy followed through. Like it or hate it it's built and not some chopped up car destine to be scrape. Or a ratrod junk.

You would just need a few fenders really, not mess up a whole car. If you bought a nice 39 and just ripped the fenders and motor... well.

WOW....what an obvious mess! I see now that it has some sort of Corvette IFS and a 'coil-over-mounted' S-10 rear axle. I'd bet a hunnert buck$ that it would scare the bejesus out of ya looking underneath that thing. Denny can try it out and let us know how it drives. He LIKES it! DD

Things like that can be burned into your mind, never to be erased. In the '60's, there was a guy from Kenosha, WI, that had a '36 5 window that was nicely done. It was featured in a couple of magazines, and since I was a '36 guy then, I took immediate notice. A couple of years later there was another feature article about the car, with all the "improvements" he had made. Said "improvements" included a garish scalloped paint job, a bunch of kitchen drawer pulls on the grille, and a big stuffed dog he used as a display at shows (along with spotlights, mirrors, and angel-hair). I was so appalled by the way he spoiled a decent car that I will never be able to forget it. I remember his name and the name of his car but will not post it here on the chance he may still be among us.

Here ya go tubman. There is a fine line between a great custom car and a clown car. I don't think this car in the thread is a clown car. But I know nothing about the car.


A lot of custom cars from the 50'60s were improved on and really went down hill fast. Too much of a good thing goes wrong real fast.
