What is the shift pattern for a 1947, 3 speed column shift?

Same as a 48. And a Falcon Ranchero. I think all three speed columns are the same.

the pattern is like an H, pull shift lever toward you and down is first, toward you and up is reverse, up one notch and push lever away from you and up is second, push lever away from you and down is third, the cross piece of the H is neutral, all 3 speed trans, coloum or floor shift are that way

Was going to post this last night but I keep getting 404 errors, it's redundant now;

In a column shift the 2-3 plane is always lowest on the column, with 3rd back towards the driver, and 2nd towards the windshield. The driver has to lift the shifter across from the 2-3 plane to the 1st rev plane, and 1st is towards the driver and reverse towards the windshield.

It's a long way of saying see the illustration above!.

RHD cars follow the rule as I have stated it, but you would have to imagine viewing the illustration from the other side.

For a novice the most natural way of grasping the shifter is with your palm upwards. This makes the lift across the gate to 1st/R more natural.

What about those cars that had the shift lever moved to the left side of the steering column so you never had to take your hand off of whatever your right hand was touching/feeling on the girl in the middle of the front seat???

klawockvet .... sounds like a good idea as long as the girl didn't shift you into neutral, or worse yet, reverse. It seems preferable to shift into neutral, turn the key off, and proceed from there.

I changed one to the left side when I was in high school. My girlfriend didn't mind. We will soon celebrate 52 years.

That's what the "necker knob" was for. (Am still using this one.)

That's exactly why I loved my floor shift instead of 3 on the tree! Much more fun teaching the girlies how to shift!!!

Oh, forgot to mention, I shortened my '39 shift lever down to seat level.
