Question 215"/223" valve lash ??

This is basically a continuation of this thread. I figure it is more applicable in this year range.
http://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=102133
The intermittent exhaust pop/misfire continued until it became almost constant. After running a cold compression test cylinders 3 & 4 were 25 psi less than the other 4. I also checked the cold valve lash. On the two low cylinders both intake and exhaust were .012 - .013. The other for were .014 - .015. I believe the spec for this engine is .015 for all valve hot. I adjusted all valve to .018". The pop/misfire appears to be cured. I put about 75 miles on it yesterday at all road speeds. The top end is a little noisy, but not bad.
Is this phenomena common for the 215/223s?
Is the .015" lash setting correct for the 215", or should it be set like the later 223" at .015" intake and .019" exhaust.

I set mine for startup after my fix at .019 and sound ok but leaking oil bad.
I ordered new gasket and gas line was in way had to disconnect to line up tube out of head. I didn't want to remove again so it set all valves again cold at .017
Its getting plenty of oil now. Has starting problem had to put gas down carb to get going .I ordered another carb got a Carter so far good.I got stuck yesterday after a good 40 miles run and shut off stopped at store and got stalled down road 1/4 mile.
The fuel line is plugged. Got ride home and got car trailer.
I blow back to tank 40 lbs looked ok.
Someone put a electric fuel pump and rubber line.
I,ll be replacing with steel line no elec pump.
This car will do 70 mph easy.
This is my new oil fix.

George,
The lash setting for this engine has me a bit confused right now. As I understand the valve train is made up of the same components from '52 to '59. So why does the lash spec change for different years? Plus I've never experienced the lash getting smaller. The only cause I can think of is the valves are sinking into the seats. I guess is depended if there are hardened seats installed. Does anyone know if these sixes have hardened seats?

If I had to guess, I think you maybe having a valve getting ready to stick.
I also think the guides are NOT replaceable, they sell over size stems.

That is what I set them at when I first got this engine 3 years ago. Then a couple of rockers were noisy on cylinders 1 and 5.

That thought also crossed my mind. This engine immediately ran better after opening the lash. I think if a valve was sticking it would still do it after resetting the gap.
I believe you are right about the non replaceable guides.
