"35 Vs '36 Spare Tire Bracket
I believe the spare tire bracket that mounts to the body is different between 1935 & 1936 3-window coupes with a trunk - amI correct?
Thanks, -Bob |

Re: "35 Vs '36 Spare Tire Bracket
Yes, reflecting the significant difference in the bolt pattern of the wheels. Their construction is also very different; the '35 bracket is a casting whereas the '36 is an assembly of stampings. There were three different versions for each model year corresponding to the different curvatures of the back panels where the brackets attached on the various body types. The coupe bracket is the same as used on roadsters and cabriolets; it has a slight concave curve on the surface where it attaches to the body.

Re: "35 Vs '36 Spare Tire Bracket
A little additional info on the '35/36 spare tire mounts:
The '35 mount is made from a solid steel casting, utilizing the '35, 5-5-1/2" bolt pattern. The '35 mount will fit the '36 without alteration, and is the preferred mount if a '36 has later model wheels with the 5-- 5-1/2" bolt pattern. The '36 tire cover will not lock to the '35 mount because there is no provision for a lock bracket on the mount. (A little 'Yanky engineering' could solve this problem) The '36 mount is as stated made from several steel stampings that are welded together.. The 'common' '36 mount does have a few variations, the most common being to fit the various body styles... Coupe vs. sedan, trunk sedan vs. slant back.. There is another variation of the '36 mount that is not very common: In late August, early September of 1936, Ford came out with a completely new style of tire cover and mount... This cover does not have the typical center that resembles a Ford hub cap. The center is smooth, convex shaped with a chrome Ford oval in the center that rotates to expose the key lock. The mount for this tire cover differs from the more common cover, having a tall extension welded over the existing lock bracket to accommodate the flatter design of the cover. The August/September cover has been identified by some 'experts' as being the Standard '36 Ford cover, however, this cover is only found, and/or correct, for a car built during the August/September time period.

Re: "35 Vs '36 Spare Tire Bracket
Hey blucar,
Very informative! Thanks for your time/input! I happen to have a complete cover of the August/Sept variety that you describe. I'm holding it for a friend/fellow fordbarner who has a convert that it works with! I just (last week) got a 5 window and am unfamiliar with year/model. Will have lots of questions for you,eh ! |
