Two good books to look for on the alloying and heat treatment issues from the Henry Ford Trade School text series:

"Metallurgy and Metallography", 1935, (fairly hard to get) and "Shop Theory", 1934, easy to find because reprinted in huge numbers during WWII.
The alloying and heat treatment info is split between the two. The different types of Ford steel and some possible uses and heat treatments are listed out. The books hurt my head as I bump into the limits of my chemical education, but I do learn a bit each time I dip in.
At least I now know what the AA and EE symbols forged into front axles mean!
