Don't know about the rest of you, but in the A, MPG= Miles per Grin, whether its 4 or 40 its all good. My opinion and I'm stickin with it.

Re: $4.45 and 14 mpg Argh!!
When you ask yourself "Would I pay someone $4.45 not to have to walk 14 miles?" It puts it in a new perspective!

Re: $4.45 and 14 mpg Argh!!
I've got to agree with Clydes 31 P/U. It is the price we pay for the enjoyment of touring in a Model A. Some of my best memories are of touring to new and different places in the A. That's worth the price, even in today's costs (San Diego currently $3.75/gal)

My 1929 Chevy 1 1/2 ton truck has a 4.88 ring and pinion and it sounds good at 25 MPH. I bought a FIAT 850 engine at a junkyard auction for $21, and just won a transaxle for it on ebay. The seller said it was also 4.88, which is a bummer because I'd like to make a small econo car or trike out of this. No way to add an overdrive to a FIAT transaxle. |

Tom, I think she'll do about 60 mph flat-out, but that's really screamin'. For while, I had a Warn OD in it ( the kind that bolts to rear of the Spicer 18 transfer case), and that would get it up to about 70 MPH on flat road, but believe me - it was a Hell-ride at that speed; with 7.50-16 mud-grips front & rear, it just wasn't designed to "handle" at those kind of speeds ! It's a lot happier at 45 MPH or less. Of course it was designed and built for a time when trucks were supposed to haul stuff; not to look pretty and go fast... The best joke of all is when the knuckle-heads try dropping a small-block Ford or Chevy V-8 into a Willys that originally had a four-cylinder and the 5.38 Timken "split-rear", and they still can't get the doggone thing to do more than 45 MPH.... As of today ( Flag Day), gas is hovering between $ 3.55 and $ 3.65 / gal for "regular"... Frank |

Re: $4.45 and 14 mpg Argh!!
For many many years my dad had a 1970 chevy C-20 with a 4.56 ratio and a TH400 transmission with a buick 3.8 V6 in it. After the engine had over just over 100k it died from oil pump failure. When he put another engine in the truck he installed a tach and found out he was cruising at around 4000rpm.
Guess under the circumstances the buick 3.8 held up pretty well. In the end he sold the truck with something like 450,000 miles on it. |

Re: $4.45 and 14 mpg Argh!!
I'm traveling from GA to AK and getting roughly 20 to 22 mpg. That's crossing the rockies etc. We are trying to maintain 50 mph. Stock 31 coupe with 5.5 Snyder head, 3:54 rear. My partned with a similar car and 3:27 gears is only getting around 16 to 18 mpg. We had the cars weighed at a truck stop he is only 240 lbs heavier than I am, Both cars tuned the same.

Re: $4.45 and 14 mpg Argh!!
A model A cost approximately $500 in 1930.
A new typical sedan today would be an easy $20,000. That's 40 times more money. Divide even the price noted on this thread by 40 and your get about 11 cents...............which is about what a gallon of gasoline cost in 1930.

The way I do it with my "A" is I drive it untill it gets low on gas then I fill it up agin, And I dont care what gas cost a gal. and I have never checked how many MPG it gets, And could care less. I bought my "A" model and spent a lot of time and money fixing it up to enjoy it, And if it gets 10, 15, or only 5 MPG Im going to keep on driving it. Uncle Bob, A model "A" may have cost $500 in 1930 but that same Model A today will cost closer to $20,000 . All in fun. |
