Default "C" Engine Identification

Hello,

I'm just looking for a little information on "C" engines. I recently purchased a 1930 Model A Coupe. It is mostly stock except that it I was told it had a "C" engine. Now, I understand that there really is no "C" engine and that they were actually later "B" engines. I looked on the pad on the driver's side of the block and it has S44 stamped on it. The gentlemen that I bought the car from said that the engine came out of a 1934 Ford taxi cab in the Portland area.

Now for the questions. Is there any actual numbers on the engine block that I should be looking for? Is there any way to tell if this is indeed a later engine with a counterbalanced crank? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Mitch

B engines had the serial number (VIN) stamped on the flywheel cover, a removable part, not the block. Your B engine has an A oil fill tube with a fumaze. Pull the oil fill tube out of the block and look in the hole with a flashlight to see if you have a counterweighted crank. You may have to rotate the engine some with the crank to get it in the right position.

Can you see the counterweights by removing the fuel pump hole cover?

If it is a 1934 engine it would have come with a counterbalanced crank

You can see the crankshaft through the fuel pump pad hole. The hole lines up almost exactly with the crankshaft just aft of the number one rod journal. Rotate the crankshaft and look inside. It is easy to see the crankshaft balance weight if it is actually there. Gar Williams

Good information... Thanks. I will give that a try tomorrow.

Without having a number on the engine, I wouldn't have any way of confirming that it is a 1934. This was just second hand information that the previous owner had given me and I would like to confirm it.

Thanks,
Mitch
