Mmo
I've been adding 3 oz per 5 gal in my gas tank.
Getting ready for an oil change and considering adding it to my oil. The directions on the container call for replacing 20% of the oil capacity with MMO. Hesitating substituting this much. Anyone do this? |

Re: Mmo
personally i wouldnt add any MMO to the oil..thats where i draw the line..
displacing 20 % or even LESS of the crank case oil is not for me.. are you having any issues that make you want to do this??? lets fill the good operating cooling system with vinegar also ??? eventually we'll screw something up |

Re: Mmo
No issues with the engine, other than the usual oil leaks.
Preventive maintenance? Maybe I just believe their advertising and all the user testimonies? So, judging from the responses so far, I'll forget about it. Thanks for the replies. Cooling system is fine also |

Re: Mmo
Until the second M is revealed I am not using it in anything - including my lawnmower. Too many products that are not a mystery.

Re: Mmo
I guess it depends on what oil you are putting in the engine. If you are using a good modern oil with modern additives, you don't need MMO in the oil. You have all the additives in there that you need.
If you are using straight 40W non-detergent oil, it might help to put some MMO in there for a short time just before you change the oil to help flush out deposits in the crankcase. But I recommend you use better oil from the start instead and be done with it. BTW, 3 oz. MMO per 5 gallons of gas is too much. Their bottle says to add 2 oz./5 gallons. The only time I'd go higher is if I knew I had a sticky valve and I was trying to free it up.

Re: Mmo
Bought 1 gal. Rotella 10W40 for the oil change.
Right, 2 oz per 5 gal gas. I'll cut back. |

Can't see how it could hurt.

Re: Mmo
Good idea to use it in the gas tank (you can save money by using ATF instead). I wouldn't put it in oil pan because if there is sludge built up in the crankcase, MMO would remove it. The problem is where does it go? The oil pump screen as shown below.

Re: Mmo
I add MMO to my gas occasionally due to posts here, but I can't see that it makes much difference and will probably stop using it. Is there any independent research that document any benefit from adding it to the gas?

Re: Mmo
20%? They must have a sales campaign going on! 20% is about a qt. and to use that much of MMO in my oil is wasteful and dangerous in my thinking. MMO is a solvent. It breaks things down, including oil. I believe in MMO for certain things, but I'm nervous about putting it in the crankcase. I'd sooner put a qt of ATF in the crankcase. ATF is a lubricant, but it is a good cleaner. However, If you're running a good multigrade, HD oil, as has been said, you really don't need anything.

Re: Mmo
Before I put $10 gas in I go "glug, glug, glug" with the MMO. Can't hurt anything and may prevent some things. 4 "glugs" and it might smoke a little

Re: Mmo
Many years ago I remember sitting around in a parts store in town. The Kendall oil rep was in there, talking about his products, and other makers products. The parts store owner asked him, just what's in Mystery oil anyway? He went into a little speech of just what it had, what it didn't have, what it would and wouldn't do.Then he said for all practical purposes it is ATF with some oil of wintergreen mixed in.I don't know if that was true or not,the rep was a big fan of using ATF for other things then transmissions.I know it was real common to use it in diesel truck fuel,we had a rack of it at the diesel pump at the American station.

Re: Mmo
When I asked my husband about MMO he said the only thing he'd ever used it for was in air starter lubricators on diesel engines. He mixed 50/50 diesel and MMO.

Re: Mmo
Here in New Zealand we use something called "Moreys Upper Cylinder Lubricant". Do you have that in the States?

Re: Mmo
I looked at the title of the thread and was confused. In the aircraft industry, Mmo is Maximum operating mach number. It would take a lot of modifications to get a Model A to read velocity on a Mach Meter.

Re: Mmo
Back in the day in the UK, you would ask for a shot of Redex upper cylinder lube in the tank at a fill up.
