Default Distributor lower shaft

I'm trying to save the original lower shaft to mate with new distributor as the original is trashed except lower. Are the upper and lower shaft just tongue and grooved together or pinned? I can't pull it apart. Thanks.

i'v just been dealing with this issue. apparently some of the shafts are one piece rather than two. you'll need upper and lower if the old shaft is in bad shape.
