Default '29 Cabriolet noises

I am trying to get my dad's '29 Cab started. Normally it has the old creaks that I'd expect when entering a vehicle that has sat for a time, but today it seems that I might be hearing things. Today I hear wood cracking, or starting to splinter. I'm not sure if this is something I am hearing, or something very serious, but I thought I'd ask. Is there anywhere I should check to make sure nothing is splintering or cracking? The frame looks decent, not rusted out. Thanks.

The entire subframe in that car is wood, except for the cowl. So it could be the top, the door structure or the subrails. I would probably guess the subrails.

How hard would it be to put new subrails in and where do I get them? I'll probably need to lift the body off to show the DMV the VIN anyway, if it isn't much more difficult I might as well throw new subrails in. However I'm not sure if I should, I want to sell this car.

It is my suggestion to not put any excessive labor into your Cabriolet if your intent is to sell the car. Replacing the subrails, or any other part of the wood, is a labor intensive task. Gar Williams
