Default '29 CCPU bed removal..?

I'm going to have to remove the bed to replace the rear crossmember...

I've read that you need to remove the fenders....Les's book maybe?

It looks to me that if you just remove the two bolts holding the running boards to the fenders you ought to be able to remove the bed and fenders as a unit...

Anyone tried this? Lots of rusty bolts on the fenders...

Any guess on how much the bed weighs?

Randy

Yep. you can take fenders off together with tray.

But you have to lift it up and over the rear wheels.

On my own, I remove fenders and just slide it back.

If you have help you can do it together no prob.

Have to be careful tho, when you push it forward not to scratch fenders on running boards.

Up to you how much damage you may cause as to a few more bolts to take fenders off.

Yes, fenders on. I've done it on several pickups.

support the rear of the bed while you remove the body bolts. The bed will unload itself unless you do this.

We did it..my wife helped....tipped it a little at a time supporting it with shorter supports each time. We set it on two caster frames and it's easy to move around....

yes, trust Brentwood Bob, post #5...this is real. If you don't securely prop up the rear of the bed before loosening any bolts, the front of the bed will pop up and the rear of the bed will bang to the ground with not too pretty results. There is a fairly serious overhang on the rear of the bed working against you; safety first here.

Even after working on my friend's restoration of a 31 widebed, the frame just looks wrong without the box. It just doesn't seem right to have so much box overhanging the frame.

For a softer ride in a pickup, carry 2 bags of SAND/GRAVEL.

And carry them at the very back where they do the most good, plus lighten the front.

On earlier short box Ford Pickups, WITHOUT Anti-Lock Brakes, they were a must, to keep the rear brakes from locking up on hard stops!
An old Pontiac had NO STOPLIGHTS, I HIT THE BRAKES HARD, & did a 180 with Chiefs' truck & tipped it on its' SIDE Gregg was in the back & JUMPED out & ran, as it was going over A crowd gathered & tipped it back over & we DROVE it home---Would have been a SUPERB commercial for DEPENDS!
FORD TRUCKS ARE BUILT TOUGH!

When I was working on the 28 tray, and my car is a workhorse, not a show pony, I was considering making it into a tipper, seeing how it almost falls off the back when a few bolts are taken out.

Was toying with the idea of putting a hinge at the rear crossmember.
