Vince,...I told him it wasn't that hard too remove....but he was adamant
about not removing the "L" bracket. I just looked at some photos, thinking
that there were 2 rivets at the center (for the spare tire bracket) but
that's not the case..

Yes, the vertical support is riveted. None of this is a bid deal if you are restoring a car but I would look at alternatives doing this project on a painted car. Ultimately I would probably end up disassembling it but I can't say that for sure.

I know there are 2 at the bottom,...but I didn't see any at the top, from
the photos that I used...
Did I miss something..?

Many of the previous suggestions seem to be oblivious to the fact that the vertical support (which Marco refers to) in the center of this panel assembly even exists. Any of these I've seen have been riveted in both top and bottom, and as long as this brace is in place I don't think there exists an easy or damage free way to remove the panel that Steve needs to replace the "D" nuts in. Am I missing something?

How about grinding off some of the underside of the D nut (the inside lip) reducing the OD until you can slide it in through the D shaped hole. You could then use some epoxy to hold it in place.

once the spare tire support is removed that panel will slide down out of the rear panel sometimes we over think the problems, we spend more time thinking how hard we can make it when 1 hour of working on the problem would solve it jmo

Well,..last night I pulled out all the parts too a "trunk assembly" where we
were talking about. I thought the problem was the "L" bracket,....wrong.

It's the exposed finish piece that's the issue. the exposed finish piece that's the issue. Yes, it's riveted in, top and bottom, and I can see why Pluck doesn't want to remove it from a painted and
finished
car.

He does have a dilemma....which would drive some of us nuts...
