Default Outside rear view mirror question

On 1954 Mercuries, did the dealerships install the outside mirrors?? Or were they installed in the factory??
I have seen so many photos 54, 55, and 56 Mercuries that have no outside mirrors at all.

LOOK HERE Real Quick -

BC 18402-A O/S MIRROR (ACCESSORY) 1954 MERC & LINC

It seems they were DEALER INSTALLED and not a factory option.

I'm almost old enough to remember, but Factory available/optional/installed outside mirrors may not have been a high demand item in the early to mid 50's. They started being popular in the mid to late 50's if I remember correctly.

I'm thinking our family had a '52 (Chevy) with an aftermarket outside mirror screw clamped to the upper drivers door window frame.

My 57 Skliner has the mirrors on the doors. They are not the big rectangular ones.

Think maybe 64 or 65 federal requirement. 65 for seat belts, 69 for 3 point belts 66 for reverse lamps. All Mustangs come with a mirror and belts. My 58 Ford had no mirror outside. Someone please correct dates if wrong.

Dug out an old pic of my 54 Merc hardtop and bought it new in November 54 and there is no mirrors on it. Don't remember if dealer ever ask if I wanted mirrors.

I remember on my Father's new '63 Dodge, the driver's door mirror was a factory option.
