28 7 tooth Steering gear
Does anyone know if an adjustable lower bearing is available. I have replaced the bearings, the worm gear, the sectorshaft. Rebuilt the end of the steering shaft, etc. etc. but I still have about 2" of lash in the steering wheel.
I thought I had hear of someone that was making this piece to replace the lower bearing. Any Ideas? The Old Tinbasher. |

Re: 28 7 tooth Steering gear
Tinbasher,
have you adjusted correctly the end-bearing play of the lower plate with several brass seals tightly? If that has too much space (1/100 "), then it is more than 3 finger widths on the circumference of the steering wheel. You can see that when the steering wheel shaft moves slightly up and down when you turn the steeringwheel slightly to the left and right.

Re: 28 7 tooth Steering gear
Tinbasher,
I suspect your problem is not the adjustment of the bearings on the worm. It is more likely to do with the wear in the worm and sector. The sector shaft bearings are also likely in need of replacement. There is no point repairing or adjusting one part of a steering box without the rest. All components wear and it only takes a little wear to get the free play you have. When you rebuild it properly, I suggest you use eccentric sector shaft bushes to get the best worm/sector engagement possible.

My steering wheel shaft was moving axially in the housing. Ditched the spacers and paper gasket and everything came back into tolerance.
