adjustable axle bell jacks
Howdy folks. Here’s fun way to kill some time in the shop. I’ve had this old banjo rear for years that was narrowed way back when for a dragster or something..I got inspired to do a banjo rear with slide in axles and bendix brakes from an f1 rear end..I would use the center section from this narrowed unit and some bells with bad races my buddy had..So now I was left with these narrowed bells; not being the type to waste old ford parts, I thought I would makes some cool stools, but that just promotes sitting down and drinking all the beer….Then ,Aahh Haa , how about some cool adjustable jackstands? I needed some sort of fixture to weld the ends on the new rear anyhow..So using some scrap steel, old handle bar grips,1” nuts,1” all thread and some thrust bearings I found at work, I whipped these dandys up. The bearings are Timken Torrington FNTKF-4872 , if you wanted to do this for yourself. Hopefully the pics will explain, it’s really just a boss that slips in the bell with an I.D. machined in the top to fit the bearing, then the top is a 1” nut welded to 2 washers, the washers then have a pilot O.D. turned into them to fit the bearing. The handle is 5/8 round rod welded to the nut and bent for hand clearance under whatever you are lifting, then I put on an old western flyer handle bar grip to spice it up. The saddles are 3.5” pipe cut in half. (you can weld whatever you want to more all thread to change the purpose, flat plate or whatever, then just change out the all thread to suit). The thurst bearings allow you to jack up your house with ease.Might take a minute to get the pics up..I'm slow at the computer.
Enjoy! Matt. |

Nice work. The thrust bearings sure make loaded adjustments easy!

Re: adjustable axle bell jacks
Very clever! I've used old axle housings as jack stands for years . . . but never made them adjustable. Great idea. Thanks for passing it along.

"I'm not sure how much use they will see...." But those jack stands have character.
