Default Timing Gear Backlash on 59AB, what's the max allowable?

What's the max allowable backlash between the aluminum timing gears on a 59AB before they should be replaced? Thanks!

On the later 8BA type engine it is listed as .002" to .003". Oversize gears used to be available if it was too excessive. If a fellow has the mains align bored you have to check & make sure it doesn't have too little a backlash. You might need some worn gears for that situation. I don't know if they made undersize ones or not.

Checking with a dial indicator against a tooth on the crank gear, I can rotate the crankshaft back and forth between the cam gear teeth about 0.012", should I replace them?

About .010 is "normal" for new gear sets. I would not worry about a used set at .012. Keep the end play in check and you will never know whether there is .005, .010, or even .020. The gears grow a little when warmed up and the aluminum gears need more clearance than the fibre.

I lined bored engines for 28 years, mostly industrail engines, alot of them made undersize gears if they were to tight. Walt
