1939 steering column tube

Should there be 2 upper bushings in a 39 steering column tube? I have one down about 8" from the top & another about 3/4" down from the top. I have trouble getting the ignition switch to turn on a lot of times. If I wiggle & move the steering wheel around & can eventually get the lock to unlock.

One only, at the top where the flare ends.

I was afraid of that. I wonder if the lower one is causing the lock problem.

What you are seeing down about 8" is probably the lock collar on the shaft not another bushing. If someone did push a bushing down there the, lock collar (held on with 2 screws) would stop it from interfering with the lock action. The problem you are having is probably the parts in the column drop.

That is what I am thinking now Deuce. I see no one stocks the replacement switch now either.

Typically, when the upper bushing failed, many mechanics would remove the light switch rod (not an easy job in a closed car 32 to 39) then the steering wheel. To remove the bushing, you would need to remove the tube itself from the car.
OR.....Many would leave the tube in place and put the new bushing in and in the process push the old one further down.
Depending on the year/model the old bushing could interfere with the lock plunger.
