do I need the dashpot on the carb with the fordomatic?
I have a 53 f100 with the flathead and the fordomatic. The current carb is a ford EAB 94. I bought a replacement carb but that one does not have the dashpot on the front left of the carb. Is the dashpot necessary for my setup?

Re: do I need the dashpot on the carb with the fordomatic?
I have been running without one on my Merc-O-matic/Ford-O-matic for over ten years without any noticeable effects.
A quote gleaned from the web--- "According to John Enyeart, president of Pony Carburetors, the primary purpose of dashpots on vehicles with automatic transmissions is to regulate emissions and not control engine smoothness. Accordingly, they are not always necessary for a vehicle to run properly."

Re: do I need the dashpot on the carb with the fordomatic?
That quote is partially true for modern cars, but there were no emissions concerns in 1953.
The dashpot is used to slow the transition from driving speed to ilde, so that the engine will not stall. The idle is supposed to be set to 425RPM to prevent creep. If you do not have the dashpot, you will have to set the idle speed higher and you may still stall out. If the replacement is for a 49-53 Ford, you should be able to transfer the dashpot bracket from the old carburetor to the new one.
