26 split rim question
I am Model A man so I have T question for you guys and I need some help. I am doing some wheels for a 1926 t pickup and the rims are rusty and painted by hand. I am going to sand blast and I was wondering what was the original finish on these?? Where they painted or cadmium plated???
I need one split rim for a spare if some one has one?? The spare as mounted on the running board standing up held in position with a bracket that is missing. Does anyone make this bracket? Thanks in advance, Ken |

Re: 26 split rim question
The hub, spokes and felloes were black but Ford started offering natural colored spokes (varnished) as an option in 1926. The rim was zinc plated. Unless it's a "point" truck, most folks just paint the rims silver. Can't help you with the spare rim--All mine are spoken for. Ford didn't provide for a spare until 1927 for the Roadster Pickup. Many dealers installed the Y-bracket from other models on a flanged post or used an after-market carrier. Snyder's sells the 27 style post but it's mighty pricey and you'll still have to find a Y-bracket. You might be better off making your own.

Re: 26 split rim question
'27 factory flange post carrier bolts to the running board, and the upper post bolts to the top prop nut. The Y just bolts to the flange, this pic shows a wire wheel that bolts directly to the flange.
Lang's sells a good repro of this post carrier. |

Re: 26 split rim question
These photos are from Bruce McCalley's "Model T Ford - The Car That Changed The World". It shows the post used for 27 Roadsters and Pickups. At nearly $500 from the vendors, it sure better be a dandy. The second photo shows the top of the post mounted to the top bow mount.

Re: 26 split rim question
The "Y" bracket that I have is for a 21 inch split rim and should bolt up to the bracket pictured above.
Below is a picture of a 27 Tudor with the spare installed. |
