1933 ford design loved/copied world over
Funny...
Some of you perfectionists will probably kill me but, I was watching Hogan's Heroes last night and was shocked when I saw Colonel Klink's car and at first I thought Hollywood modified a 1933/34 ford, but later found out it was a 1938 Mercedes, picture on right! Funny! That Mercedes is a 4 cylinder engine too! Like a model B 1933. To think, the German's used Old Henry's design for their famous Mercedes for years after Ford introduced it. You can go to http://www.relicsofthereich.com/comp...red?Itemid=179 To view the article about the ongoing restoration of the German Staff Car. Last edited by FrankWest; 01-18-2016 at 07:19 PM. |

Frank
I'm with you in that I think the 1933 Ford is THE most beautiful Ford ever designed, with the swooping grill, curved hood sides.....More so than the 34. But to the 33/34 design....Look at the Citroen's for the same era....and with that said....and it may be hearsay on the "Barn" but.....TO ME.....the 1933, 34 & 35 Era of cars by almost ALL manufactures are some of the most beautifully designed cars of ALL time!!! OF any years!!! |

That was a Bob Gregorie design that got its start in the UK in 1932 as the Model Y. The design was so popular in Europe that Ford brought it to the U.S. for the 33 Model.

Re: 1933 ford design loved/copied world over
There is an interview with him on line, maybe a link in one of the links I posted.
The history of Ford Motor Company is fascinating. Many talented and interesting characters, of which Henry was only one. He was the visionary, but he never would have made it without a cast of very talented individuals. Gregorie was more Edsel's guy than Henry's, though. |

Re: 1933 ford design loved/copied world over
As much as I love to sing the praises of Ford Motor Company's flathead era, the design was actually first done by Graham in 1932. I think the 1932 Graham Blue Streak was on the market before the Model Y. There is an interesting article on the subject here: http://www.rodauthority.com/news/blu...r-on-the-road/

Way to go, Coupe. Excellent article and picture....Too bad the 'Blue Streak' didn't have a Flathead V8 in it....

Re: 1933 ford design loved/copied world over
I had seen the Graham before, but in terms of the heart-shaped grille, the Graham and the Model Y both came out for the 1932 model year. I wonder which inspired which or if there was another car or design that influenced both?

Re: 1933 ford design loved/copied world over
I used to have a book (lost to a wash machine malfunction) that depicted a design that Edsel had given to Ferdinand Porsche. The year was '33 or '34, he was visiting Germany and brought the plans for a rear engine, independent sprung, streamlined sedan. (of course Henry wanted nothing to do with any thing that ridiculous) The pictures of the drawings were representative of an over sized Beetle!

IMG_0513.jpg Here is a picture of a 1932 Graham coupe grille. I've had the car for 52 years. |
