What are the differences between a 21a and a59a distributor? Any info would be appreciated.

The caps, cap clips, and rotor are the only difference in a 42 21a and a 46-48 59a

The "21A-" is a 1942 distributor, commonly called a "Crab Cap" distributor. Note the two snaps to hold "crab" cap in place. Crab cap and wires below!  The "59A-" is the '46-'48 Ford/Mercury distributor, commonly called a "Rabbit Ears" distributor.
