Thanks Guys, I don't want the org. Unit , I want to know if there is one that will replaced it. One that will work from another motor. Some say a '75 ford truck would interchange . Anyone know for sure or have aNAPA part number. I have change to 12 volts , i have a voltage regulator on the cluster.

I use a '75 ford sender but I also have the gauge that goes with that sender. I doubt that sender would match a stock gauge. You can get a '75-6 sender from autozone or advance auto and try it for about $15. If you can find a gauge/sender off a '75 Ford truck and you already have 12V, you can disassemble the stock gauge, replace the stock movement with the '75 movements ( it will fit exactly in the stock gauge case), install the newer sender and you're ready to go. newer gauge/sender with stock look.

The single terminal sender is actually an over temp switch that opens the circuit and causes the gauge to go to maximum hot. I'm pretty sure there is nothing like that used in later cars. The two terminal sender that is in series with it controls the normal readings of the gauge. Google King Seely or see this link:

This is true and iv done the same.

Ford kept using basically the same 6v gauge from I believe 57 to 78 in large trucks.
The 40 gauge face fits it perfectly and it fits as is in the 40 housing.
It is completely undetectable except for one thing …. at rest it is on cold

The advantage is
You can walk in any auto parts store and get the single sender that runs it.

BillM

I think that you have it backwards, the single terminal sending unit is the one that changes the reading on the gauge with changes in temperature, the double contact unit is just an over temperature switch.

The link I posted didn't work; try this one:
http://www.hansenwebdesign.com/truck...nstruments.pdf

In that PDF it shows the temperature sender with only one terminal; with the case grounded. However in the Ford V8 system the two terminal sender is grounded by the normally closed switch in the single contact "sender". This arrangement provided a backup in case the side of the engine with the single sender went over temp. There has been postings by others who have copies of the Ford manuals that details this.

Just to clear up any confusion, here is the explanation with diagram of how the two temperature senders work together. Indeed, the two contact sender is just a flow through for the current to the single contact sender that actually varies the current for the gauge. The two contact sender is just a "circuit breaker" that opens if over temp.

That's great Brooks … very easy swap except for taking the cluster in and out.

So everyone else will know …. this is what they look like
I believe this basic cluster was used from 57 to 61 in everything pickup and truck
Then it was continued in use all the way to 1978 in bigger trucks - f 500 - 600 and cabovers / C series trucks.

1.Temp - oil - and fuel gauges fit directly in the 40 cluster housing … no mods what so ever
2.The orig or repo 40 gauge faces simply crimps on and off in place of the black ones in the photo.

Id bet these gauges also fit in later fords also.
I’ve saved a bunch of them from trucks that got scrapped …. The steering column in the same trucks are very useful also …. oldtime looking but with a turn switch

You are correct; and thanks Old Henry for the picture out of the manual, I will definitely copy and save that.
