Front Motor Mount Installation on 47
Hello All,
As seen in my previous post, I just finished installing new Bob Drake water pumps on my 47 Super Deluxe / Flathead V8. While I had everything torn down, I thought I'd go ahead and replace the front motor mounts. Couldn't get them from Drake, so I decided to get them from another vendor. Anyway, the new ones with the coned shaped (tapered) rubber donut are about 1/4" thicker than the original biscuits that I pulled out with the water pumps. I am using my floor jack and a piece of 2" X 12" board under the pan and I am able to get the motor mount under the passenger side water pump without issue. The drivers side is another story. When I raise the engine, it's stopping at a certain point, then starts raising the car and likes about 1/4" clearance in being able to get the mount under the drivers side water pump. I don't know if I am going to have to loosen up the left rear mount to get the clearance I need or what. Anyone had this problem? Putting in front motor mounts shouldn't be any big deal. I even got out my cherry picker and piece of chain and tried to lift the engine on the drivers side but it still has a stopping point during lifting and I still need 1/4" to get the motor mount under the water pump. Maybe it's some linkage on the left side (clutch, etc.), that is causing the engine to not be lifted any higher.

hi, I did the same thing a few weeks back, are the hoses hooked up to the radiator? I found I had to undo the bolts on the radiator to chassis, as this was raising everthing as I was jacking up the engine.I was only replacing mounts, didn't have pumps off. Just a thought, cheers

You really need to determine exactly what is hindering the lift. In other words, WHAT is it hitting. An additional 1/4" lift at the pump should not be any sort of a problem. DD

I'd think whatever it is contacting would be fairly easy to pinpoint. Is something possibly hitting the firewall? DD

It's got to be something simple. I just need to get someone to come out to the shop and work the floor jack while I look at everything while the engine comes up.
I didn't think about something hitting the firewall. I will look at that DD. I was just scratching my head trying to figure out what it could be. Didn't know if that clutch pedal cross shaft could have been hitting top of the hole in the frame or not. Had it not been for this roadblock, I would have had it running this afternoon. Thanks! Kevin

Kevin, the engine should lift evenly straight up in front. The rear will pivot on the transmission mounts to do so. Both motor mounts must be disconnected to do so, don't have one connected trying to lift the other. The amount to lift the engine shouldn't need to be greater than 3" in the front, more than enough to change out the mounts.

I agree with what you are saying. For whatever reason, the passenger side came up that much, but the drivers side is not. I will just have to get under the car to see what is happening. Nothing on the top side is hitting the firewall, and the tranny bell housing is not hitting the floor because the engine isin't lifting that high on that side. So, not it's a process of elimination. How about the exhaust pipe causing the motor to not lift. It may be jammed up against something or pressing on the hole in the frame.

Kevin, take a look under the car. A 2x12 is awful big, you may be trying to lift the drag link or the crossmember.

I have thought about that too and will be doing some checking tonight. Alan, thank you again my friend! Yes I know what you mean. I checked under the car before I started lifting. I also removed the jack, and swung my cherry picker over the engine and ran a strap around the left manifold and lifted from the top and it's still hitting. So, I will be doing more checking from under the car tonight but I am thinking it's something either to do with exhaust, or tranny shift or clutch linkage. I really appreciate all who have weighed in on this problem. I posted because I didn't know if anyone had encountered this or not. Thanks!! Kevin

Undo the other engine mount and see how evenly it raises up. If it goes up nice and cleanly to a point above the normal position, call it good, fit both mounts and walk away.
Don't move things too much because you will be bending the exhaust system. Mart. |

Move the wood up towards the front of the pan right on the edge where it starts to curve up as I mentioned before. Also check and make sure the oil filler cap isn't hitting the firewall. G.M.

*UPDATE*
Ok, With the help of a friend (hard to be in 2 places at once), we figured out what was limiting the lift to get the mount under the drivers side water pump. The exhaust pipe! My car has dual exhaust and the best way I can explain it is, that the pipe was hitting the let top side of the X frame rail under the car, about 1 foot or so back off the manifold. I know there is another name for this part of the frame, but I know you Ford Barners will know what I mean. So, as I was lifting the engine, the pipe was getting to the bottom of that part of the frame and stopping. I ended up dropping the pipe off the manifold and was able to get the height I needed to get the left mount under the water pump. Want to say a big Thank You to all who weighed in on this issue! I'm glad you found the source of the interference. It's always good to know why something was a problem than for it to remain a mystery. Make sure the exhaust has some clearance when it's all fitted back up.

Thanks for finishing the story for us. So many times a problem is posed, numerous suggestions are made, and we never know how the story ended, i.e. what turned out to be the real problem and solution.
