292 rod bolts
Hello all. Mabey this has been asked before. I have a 55 mercury 292 that needs rod bolts. Got a set of arp and they won't fit. The heads are too big. Called arp and they said that they know there is a problem but have no fix. Suggested I grind the heads of the bolts
Can't find another supplier of bolts. Anyone else run into this? Ron Fox in |

Re: 292 rod bolts
I would contact John Mummert (ford-y-block.com), preferably by phone. You can also try Ted Eaton (eatonblancing.com) or Tim McMaster. Ted and Tim are at Bonneville Speed Week; I'm not sure about John.

Re: 292 rod bolts
Thanks for the reply. I bought the bolts from Eaton. Didn't get a reply from him. Mummert email said grind the bolts. Will try the other guy

Re: 292 rod bolts
Can the rods be broached to provide enough clearance for the bolts? A good machine shop should have an answer.

Re: 292 rod bolts
ARP has two different rod bolts for Y-blocks. Did you order the right bolts for your rods? If your 55 292 has the original EBU rods, you should have ordered ARP 154-6005 bolts. All other Ford Y-block rods would use ARP 154-6004. If you go to ford-y-block.com, you can watch their video of their H-beam connecting rods. The lack of availability of correct replacement rod bolts is addressed in the video.

Re: 292 rod bolts
If both Mummert and ARP said grind the bolts, do it. Eaton’s probably going to say the same thing. On my 340 build I ground the bolts and the rods slightly to clear the cam. Those weren’t Ford rods, one of Mummert’s stroker kits with an offset grind on a 312 crank.
Have you balanced everything yet, or are you going to? |

Not balancing. Long story. The short version very bad rear main seal leak. Found seal journal on crank was pitted badly. On my third crank trying to find a good one. Just trying to get it back together properly so I can drive the old girl

Re: 292 rod bolts
The Ford Y-block engines are internally balanced. If you are replacing components, I highly recommend having the reciprocating assembly balanced.

Re: 292 rod bolts
So ARP knew they were sending you parts with issues all along. I'd call them up and ask them to send me a return shipping label, and tell them you want a refund. If they refuse call your credit card co. (Always ask who you are talking to).
