Re: 51 Shoe box brakes
Chris at SBC may be able to help you out. You have manual dic brakes so they will not feel like power. Do you have a proportioning valve? Is the pedal low or does it feel hard but the car is not stopping? Did the master cylinder come with the brake kit?

Re: 51 Shoe box brakes
Are you saying that you still have drum brakes on the front?

Re: 51 Shoe box brakes
Are you confident that all air has been bled from the brake system?
Can you lock up any wheels? If you can have an outside observer look at the car when doing this so you can understand which wheel or set of wheels aren't helping you to stop. If you can't lock up any wheel(s) get a brake pressure gauge kit ($50) to learn the pressure at each corner. This is a 2 man job as you will place the gauge into the bleeding screw and observe while someone presses the brake pedal. This is a diagnostic which will tell you if you have adequate pressure at each wheel to stop the car. Video of procedure |

Re: 51 Shoe box brakes
I have to second what Tubman said, the all rebuilt STOCK drum brakes in my '51 performs very well. At one time I assumed I was going to front discs as I had on some other vintage cars, but never did on the '51.
