34 fluids / lubrication
I am interested in learning what lubrications / fluids are being used for a stock flathead V8 coupe, what has proven to be working successfully for people over time?
What brand additive(s) are suggested for use with today's unleaded fuel? Should premium fuel be used? What transmission lubrication is recommended? (weight, brand etc.) What antifreeze works well for the flathead (iron heads)? What lubrication should be used in the differential?(weight, brand etc.) What oil should be used in the engine? (weight, brand etc.) Are synthetic lubrications better for transmission, differential, engine oil? Is there any additive or preventative maintenance that can help prevent sticking exhaust valves? Winters are long in Upper Michigan, any storage tips are also appreciated! Thank you for your time. Regards, Rich |

Re: 34 fluids / lubrication
This is from a 1934 FORD FACTORY service bulletin . You will find many different opinions on what to use now [ do a search on lube ] and even some that think Ford didn't know how much oil to use in the engine .
I personally use 20-50 motor oil , green prestone and SAE 140 in steering , tranny , u-joint and rear end . The capacity specs in the bulletin are right . |

Re: 34 fluids / lubrication
use about any modern gl3 gear oils for the trans and diff, for extra protection in them add a half a can of stp, I use valvolene 20-50 for the engine, use marvel mystery oil in the fuel, 4 or 5 oz to ten gallons, helps prevent stuck valves and keeps fuel tank from rusting I don't like preston, look at the top of rad core of cars that use it, there will be a white calcium like build up on top of the cores, I use peak anti freeze, with modern motor oils you don't need any additives, when shutting down the engine for the winter wind the engine up to 1000 rpm or so while you drizzle mmo down the carb, when it starts to smoke turn engine off, mmo will have coated the valve guides and the cylinder walls
