Hey all, in the process of replacing my tires. I have 4 new Firestones ready to go.

I want to install period accurate valve stems in the tubes. Does this look correct for my 1930 Roadster?

I think the short dust covers are out of stock everywhere.

New replacements. Would it be okay to run without the dust covers until/if they become available again?

I have never used these. Do they seal well? Do you need to use some sort of adhesive or sealant? Why were they used originally? Could they be used to fix a tube that had a bad rubber valve stem?

They seal well if installed properly. An adhesive or sealant isn't necessary, but I bet some people use one.

Not sure why they were used originally, but I would guess that it was because the processes to make a rubber valve stem did not exist or someone had not invented that yet.

Can they be used to fix a tube that had a bad rubber valve stem? Probably. It depends upon where the problem is. You remove the original stem entirely. There must be a video of it somewhere. There was a discussion of how to do this at the MARC meet valve stem seminar in Morgantown in June.

I've used the replacement stems & they work fine. I put some of Snyder's replacement '30 stems in my tubes, bought them 30 years ago at 1/2 the price they are now & they worked fine with no sealant, but, I had to fix three pin hole in the NEW tubes I bought 10 years ago.

Thank you all. Some great discussions. I found the metal stems at Bert's and they are on the way. Will have to run without the dust covers until they're available once again.
