Default 37-38 Solid Driveshaft Sleeve

Hello from CT. I have two torque tubes with the solid front driveshaft bearing sleeve: Both have solid shafts and a center bearing: Everything i have read so far says it should come out fairly easy with a few hammer blows to a pipe : Well, not so: I put heat on one and still no headway: Any help will be greatly appreciated: I need to replace the front seals: Thanks, Skip

What is it exactly you are trying to remove, the center bearing or the race for the bearing up behind the speedo gear? The race for the front bearing is not solid and has a dimple to prevent it from turning.

Thanks for the reply: Ford service bulletin, subject 4000, April 15, 1938 shows the change in the sleeves: Part # 68-4645 and 68-4655: KR Wilson tool SV-245 for removal: Vern Tardel Ford Banjo booklet shows him with a long rod driving it out: Mine won't budge: open for ideas: skip

I made up a puller to do this job. Simply put, you pull on back of seal, seal will push the bearing sleeve off with itself. If no-one else comes forward with more detailed info, I can post tomorrow, as I have the puller at work.

are you trying to move the shaft away? don't forget to remove the circlip - retainer.
That front bearing sleeve IF that's what youre trying to do [?] has a small hole in it and with a certain tool you hook it and twist it in and pop it out.

Service bulletin 4000 also shows the installation on the L-Z with the seal B-4245 behind the race and the internal stops welded into the torque tube. Of course you can not hammer on the internal stop for the seal. K R Wilson pulled the seal and race out as one piece with SV-245 tool from the front of the torque tube pulling against the seals metal shell.

This video shows how to make a simple tool to remove and install sleeve. You can then use a pipe or rod to drive out seal.

Thanks for your replies: Driveshaft is out, bearing is out, speedo gear is out: Was not aware of the stops: That is probably the reason the the sleeve did not pop out: I was hitting the stops: I have seen the great video on making the tool: As i also have a model A this will be useful: Very informative: With the solid type sleeve the tool can't grab anything: See my attachment from the Ford bulletin: Agian, thanks, sk

I made that front bearing race removal tool from PVC. Easy to make and works great.
Just like the one in the above video.

I made a pusher plug that centers in the seal and clears the seal stopping shoulder that's machined in place inside the torque tube. I have a long rod that attaches to the pusher plug and comes out the back end of the torque tube with enough length to hammer on to drive out the seal and bearing sleeve. THIS METHOD WILL NOT WORK IF A CENTER BEARING IS IN PLACE IN MIDDLE OF TORQUE TUBE.

Great tools: I have the center bearing: On my 38 tube the seal is shot: I found the spring laying in the tube: My 37 fairs better: I am experimenting on the 38 tube: If all else fails i can live with the used seal in the 37 tube: Since i am rebuilding the diff i thought it would be nice to replace the tube seal: The bell seals are easy to knock out: sk

Sorry, my puller is much like JM35's. It won't work with centre bearing in place

Brian, Thanks, Great tools: 19Fordy: I saved your print to copy the tool: Thanks, i will have to make one for the tool box: When i installed my Mitchell overdrive in my A i also rebuilt the diff: I cheated on the seal installer and bought one when i sent for the new parts for the diff: Looks like JM35 tool: I will keep at it till i get it: I will post when i do: Thanks to all: sk PS. Check out my post on HAMB for the diff dolly for early fords i made: I have found it to be a big help in dropping, moving and storage of rear axles: I think i gave measurements, also Model a pinion puller:
