Default 1940 dual exhaust

I took my ‘40 convertible to a muffler shop to have dual exhaust installed. They said it could not be done, because they could not get a pipe through the driver’s side of the frame. They said clutch, transmission, and steering linkage were in the way. Has someone solved this problem already? If so, I’d like to see a picture. Thanks, Sid

can be and has been done so many times the world over suggest you find a better shop that is interested in what they do and can give you the correct advice in reguards to pipe size etc

I agree with aussie merc.
My gosh, this has been done a million times. It appears you went to a place that well, I'd have little (nearly zero) faith in.
You can purchase everything you need for this conversion "off the shelf" and either install it yourself or have someone (not them) install it for you.

I just had it done on my convertible. I bought Red’s Headers and the header pipe he sells with it. The header pipe fit like a glove on both sides. Airport Muffler in Snohomish, WA did the work. I bought two 26” Smithy’s from Amazon for $50 each, the only reason I bought from Amazon was the “free shipping”. I thought the mufflers were too big but the guys at the shop said let’s go straight from the header pipe, through the frame and put the mufflers at an angle in front of the rear axles and then the tailpipes go over and down and straight out. I am not near my car for another month or I would post a picture. It works perfectly.

had same problem with my '41. bought some mandrel bends from speedway, cut it sections, meandered past clutch/ brake into the clear. maybe a muffler shop doesn't want to mess with all that. If you can do as I did, then take it back to the shop and let them finish the rest.

Yep ; if pipe goes under the pedals they can hit it when depressed -just have to check fit before driving. Newc

Just as Pech 33 says I put Red's headers and Smithy mufflers on my '41. We have good exhaust shops. The one that did mine was excellent. And BOY do I love the sound!!!

I had a new system installed on my 40 a couple years ago and they kept everything up in the frame and even went around my P&J booster assembly. Even though my motor is a sbc the same principals apply. Used Flow Master mufflers and 2 inch pipes, nice sound.

Thanks guys. Especially for the pictures. I’ll talk to red’s tomorrow and see if I can buy the pipe from manifold to muffler on driver’s side. Sid

Red's headers and an old school muffler shop worked on my '41. The clutch pedal did hit the pipe at full depression. Back on the lift; a little heat and big pliers fixed that little problem.

Red's connecting pipe is designed to work with his headers, I don't think it will work with a stock exhaust manifold. You could also check with Waldron's Exhaust, they might have a pipe that would work.

As all have said, it's been done many many times. A system from Reds will fit right in, buuut check your brake line routing. I know I had to move it from the stock location on my 41, and I think my buddy had to do it on his 40 also.

I have a Waldron’s setup I put on my 40 convert. Works just fine through the frame. Alitrle tight on drivers side but it’s ok , sounds great .

It has been done many times, I've done it myself, but that does not mean it is easy. The pipe might need some careful denting to clear the clutch pedal.

Like many I’m a DYI guy, probably to a fault! I’m sure many times it would’ve been faster & if I included my time as $ probably would’ve been cheaper too ! I did my duals using flex pipe to shape for getting past the X frame holes & avoiding interference issues. Then very carefully removed them & brought both to my local auto repair shop guy with a exhaust pipe bender. I use his shop for my daily drivers. He charged me $75 to duplicate both & they fit great. The rest of the tail pipes routing was easy.

I showed the car to the folks at Meineke, and was told that they could install duals if I could find an exhaust manifold for the driverÂ’s side with a rear dump. That way the exhaust pipe installation would be much easier, since it would already clear the steering gear. Was an OEM exhaust manifold with a rear dump ever made for a flathead? I know Reds sells headers that would solve the problem, but my car is restored to original. I know Â’40 Fords didnÂ’t come with duals, but I want to make that change for performance and that sound. Using OEM manifolds would help with making it look stock, even though itÂ’s not. Thanks, Sid
