Default Pan Gasket / Milage

If this is a double post I be sorry, Has anyone used silicone to seal the pan instead of a cork gasket, reason I ask is I want to get the engine running without putting a bunch of money in a shippers coffers until I can afford an overhaul if any.
The clock shows 98,000, will one of these engines go that far or is it fair to say some work has been done to it.
Thanks

Just as there were people that used up an engine in 10,000 miles there were probably people that got 100,000, but most engines probably had been apart by 50.000 ---there have been letters published that give praise for long running---getting rings and a valve job at 85k on a 3 year old police car.

I had the babbitt on 1 rod come off, parts of the pan gasket stuck to the pan, parts to the block---since I was doing a "tempoary" repair I just used Hylomar gasket dressing ---it seeps a little but the car doesn't mark it's territory, the tempoary repair is 20 years old

I have seen pan gaskets made from shoeboxes and other containers ---the pieces joined with hand sewn dovetail joints

In my scrounging through the salvage yards most cars of the 50-60 era were all done at about 85,000, so I figure that this engine might be safe to fire up after I get the oil changed but I watched a video on you tube that showed an A pan with what could be best described as tar as I think it was past the sludge stage.

A pan gasket along with the valve cover gasket shouldn't break the bank, nor should the freight to get it there. This would allow you to drop the pan and valve cover and clean out all the accumulated sludge. Using new gaskets will also make it easier to take apart when the time comes to to a more comprehensive job.

If you are coming to the Twin Cities just pick up the gaskets up at Little Dearborn and pay no shipping.

If you mail order I know Bert's for one just charges actual shipping costs and is quick to ship.

At times I've just applied silicone to the old gasket and put things back together.

I've used black silicone successfully, just not at the ends where the gap would be too great.

Thanks guys, I am still in flux mode to whether or not I am going to keep the car. What scares my pocket book is the price of babbiting.

if i was to do a complete pan gasket out of silicone which i wouldn't "right stuff " would be what to use and it would fill large gaps. its not cheap either

I'd think real hard about using silicone. I've seen too many oil pump screens plugged up completely with what squeezes to the inside and gets hard and falls off to get stuck in the screen. It gets sucked in there so tight you can't even pull it out with pliers.

yes, it might have even been cheaper than $12, I can't remember now. I was shocked that they could get it. It was in Portland so I had to wait a day. I replaced it last month. A Felpro cork set with the rope for the front.

NAPA carries several different A parts, I think. There was a thread about this in the past year I think. Most are available day after ordered if not at the NAPA you frequent. FWIW
