Will silicone work for the pan?

Default Re: Pan Gasket

I use silicone ( RTV) at the joints of the gaskets, but no where else. Its slippery, and if the entire block rail is siliconed, the gasket will slip when you tighten the bolts. I prefer to glue the gasket to the block with Permatex high tack, using silicone at the rear main area where the two gaskets join each other and the metal and at the front where the gaskets rest on the oil seals. I do not use sealant on the pan, so it can be easily removed in the future. With a flat pan rail, new gasket and the right amount of even torque, leakage is not a problem.

Welcome to the Barn ! I like the new avitar. As a newbie I would recommend you get a copy of Les Andrew's book Vol I, and some of the vendor catalogs. You might also try doing a search for "pan gasket". Many helpful hints on how to install. Make sure the gasket flange/lip on the pan is flat and DO NOT overtighten the bolts.
