Default Just wondering

I pulled the head back off my A engine today. I could get the engine to start and run good and could idle it down to a perfect idle. But as I advanced the throttle it would start popping through the carburetor. I new I should have put the adjustable lifters in. I am thinking that is the problem with popping bad valves. The thing that bugs me is when I took the head off there was oil all over the gasket. Does anyone know a good shop to get a head and manifolds milled. In the Stockton or Modesto CA. area. Richard/Ca

Have you done a compression and leak down test to find if
there is a valve problem??

Joe in Turlock can do your milling.

His business is called Turlock Machine. He also does very high quality full rebuilds on Model A motors.

A friend just installed one of Joe's engines and is pleased with it. He said the shop is very professional looking. We haven't visited but it is on our list of things todo when we head down for the Turlock swap meet.

I have one of Joe's touring rebuilds in my Tudor. It runs fantastic.

Ya! I kind of forgot about Joe in Turlock. Right now I can't afford one of his engines. I did not do a compression check. I think the adjustable lifters and polishing the values will help a lot. Then I can work on getting one of Joe's engines To big of hurry to get the car running the first time to do it right.

As long as the head is off, just raise each valve and take a look at the face and seat. You can still check the lash. If the clearances are good, why worry about adjustable lifters.

That sounds just like what I should do. Because I don't want to pull the engine again and I certainly don't want to lay on my back to change the lifters. by the looks of things it probably would not hurt to lap the values. Thanks Patrick L and Bob C P.S and John LaVoy

Good to see you back in action Richard,
Maybe I can send Hayden over to fix it up for you and Jeanie,
Make sure you put a copper gasket back,

It sounds like you're running lean, possibly cap jet. Did you open the gav up and see if it would smooth out? Another thing is a possible vacuum leak. Burnt valves are a consequence, not a symptom.
