advice needed - what parts to take on a raod trip?

A neato item is a gas tank cap with an air hose attachment added. If the fuel pump fails, the air in the spare tire or better yet, a big truck tube on the top will get you down the road.

I don't know where I got it, but I found a cheap set of tools in a plastic case. It was about 16" X 12" X 4". It was cheap set, but that was actually good, because the assortment was great even though the tools were not the best. In addition to a socket set, wrenches, screwdrivers and pliers, it had electrical tape, a test light, a small hacksaw, and a bunch of other miscellaneous stuff. It also had small compartments with clear plastic covers on the outside that I filled with nuts and bolts, screws and electrical terminals. I still have it and take it with me every place I go. I have a 1951 model with just about everything new or rebuilt, so I don't take any parts with me. I just have a jack and a good spare. Among my trips was one from the Twin Cities to Chicago which passed without incident. While not too familiar with prewar cars, I believe that the post war cars are reliable enough to be used without worrying about spare parts, etc. if properly maintained.

Here in Russia we don't have anything like AAA, EFV8 doesn't exist either. A friend will go in my wake in a modern SUV as a back-up. The car is in sound condition, I have a Powermaster alternator, modern waterpumps, a modern starter and rebuilt carb so I don't expect troubles there. I guess it would be a good idea to take an ignition coil, a distributor, condenser, fuel pump and a belt. Axle jack and spare tire for sure, but I don't plan on changing inner tubes - we have a lot of soviet era cars that still use inner tubes so that's not a problem and tire shop are numerous along the way. Tools, water, oil. Vodka as a handcleaner Unfortunately, handguns are against the law.
And the wife - she's questioning the sanity of loving old cars since the day I brought Ford V8 home so no need for that

My mind works with logic (or use to) So what do you take with a 3 or 4 yr old car huh?
1) forget any kind of tool box.
2) a master card or a fat check book
3) they say a lot of new cars don't even have a spare tire, never the less a jack.
4) phone if you have one if not flag down the next police or fire cruiser-they will call.
5) the modern car timimg belt always takes a dump in the middle of no where.

Now its now 2018 and I still do not own anything that does not have a carb, and points
and have not walked yet BUT I do have coat hanger, small lunch box= screw driver one of those folding transformer plyers things. Oh small jumper wire and 3 new condensers that we all know that todays condensers are junk.
Wise man say travel light and swift and do not drive where there is no tire tracks..And you don't need a gun! lug wrench just as good under ya seat...
All I can say with cabin fever at its best, I aint comming out till the coat an boots come off.......LOL

Ha ha! Yes, been there! And of course, none of the big heavy spare parts you take will be needed, but you'll wish you had the one you didn't bring! Never fear, almost any repair can be made at the side of the road. I've crisscrossed this country more than a few times, and have never been towed home.

My 49 is a bit different but I have distributor, coil, voltage regulator, fuel pump and a rear axle. I also have portable aluminum jack stands and a portable floor jack. Wrenches sockets screwdriver and multimeter. And a hammer. Hammer is good to have. I keep a jumpsuit in the car so I can peel off any dirt when I'm done. I had two battery packs for my cell phone because I cannot charge it in the car. My fan belts and hoses looked good so I did not concern myself with them. Also the waterpumps were rebuilt by Skip so no concern there either.

I'll need to look in the plastic tub I carried on the 2013 EFV8 C/A cross-country trip to remember what all I carried, and report back . One item I didn't carry, and really needed, was an extra windshield wiper arm and blades. The only set I had blew completely off my car and were lost forever while trying to keep up with Frank Miller crossing the Nevada Desert going 70+ mph .

Great advice Clem. Beer duct tape is good and you could drink what you don't use also it would be compact, just imagine how much you could stash in the trunk for the trip!(it might affect the wrenching if the situation arose though).

The most valuable thing that a person should take on a long trip in any vehicle is common sense and a well maintained vehicle.
I have owned my '36 Ford for sixty-six years, I have driven it over 95K in all of the eleven western states under ever weather condition one can imagine. I generally carry a small set of hand tools, end wrenches a few sockets and a couple of screw drivers.
I make sure the tires are in excellent condition and that the spare is as good as the worst road tire. I also make sure the tire changing tools are in the car. They usually are because I never remove them from the car except on the few occasions when I have had a tire problem.
I have carried a set of Weed-V-Bar tire chains in the trunk of my '36 since 1952, why I don't know, I have not used them since 1955 when I got caught in a blizzard going over the Baker grade heading to Los Angeles.
One must have item on an Early V8 Ford is an electric fuel pump that is permanently installed in the car, with a control switch for emergency's.

Requires starting a week early

A. LUBRICATION
1. Check engine oil and oil filter; change if due. 2. Check gear oil levels in transmission, over-drive and rear axle; change if due. 3. Check gear oil level in steering box. 4. Grease universal joint, torque tube bearing and all other fittings.
5. Grease wheel bearings if due.
6. Carry 2 quarts of engine oil.
B. TIRES
1. Check air pressure in tires.
2. Check tread and sidewall condition.
3. Check tread depth.
4. Check for uneven wear and cracks.
5. Carry jack, jack hand, lug wrench.
6. If tube tires: Carry tire pump, tire irons, spare tube and patch kit
C. LIGHTING
1. Check headlights, hi/low beams

D. FUEL SYSTEM:
1. Check gas tank fuel level. Fill and add additives as desired. 2. Verify tank and gas lines are leak-free. 3. Check fuel filter, if used. Clean or replace if necessary.
4. Check fuel pump(s) for leakage.
5. Check carburetor(s) for proper adjustment and leakage. 6. Carry new, rebuilt or good used spare fuel pump.
7. Carry new, rebuilt or good used spare carb.
8. Carry minimum of 2 gallons of spare gas, plus additives.
E. COOLING SYSTEM:
1. Check coolant condition and level in radiator tank.
2. Clean/flush system if necessary.
3. Check for leaks at hoses and connections.
4. Check operation of thermostats
5. Carry one of each new, rebuilt or old (if in good condition) water pumps.
6. Carry one new radiator hose of each type used, including heater. 7. Carry one extra gallon of premixed coolant.
F. ELECTRIC SYSTEM
1. Check, clean and tighten primary wire connections.
2. Check cell fluid levels in battery.
3. Check battery terminals and cables; tighten and clean if necessary.
4. Check connections on starter and solenoid.
5. Inspect and clean spark plugs and wires. 6. Carry spare spark plugs.
7. Inspect distributor cap, rotor and points.
8. Check and adjust timing if necessary.
9. Check connections on coil.
10. Carry jumper cables (min 10 ft length).
11. Carry electric storage charger.
11. Carry spare cap, rotor, points and condensor.
12. Carry new or good used spare coil 13. Carry spare fuses of various required sizes and types.
14. Carry one gallon distilled water.
G. ENGINE
1. Test compression of each cylinder (plugs out; throttle plate open) and analyise results.
Atmospheric pressure X compression ratio + atmospheric pressure + 5 = normal compression
2. Check oil pressure gauge and sending unit for operation.
3. Check coolant temperature gauge and sending units for operation..
4. Check torque on head bolts (55 fp Iron; 45 fp Alum).
5. Check clutch and brake pedal free-play settings.
6. Check transmission shifting.
7. Test windshield wipers for wear and operation.
8. Carry one new or used (if good) fan belt of each type used.
9. Carry full set of spare engine gaskets.
H. BRAKES
1. Check fluid level in master cylinder; add if as required.
2. Check rigid and flexible hydraulic lines for leakage or corrosion.
3. Pull drums and check shoes, springs, drums, wheel cylinders (on hydraulics).
4. Check hand brake for proper operation.
5. Adjust drum and hand brake if required.
6. Carry container of spare brake fluid.
I. STEERING & SUSPENSION
1. Check wheel alingment.
2. Check condition of king pins, tie rods and ends, drag links and sway bars.
3. Check condition of steering box and its end play.
4. Check springs and shackles.
5. Check shock absorber bushings, bolts and linkage.
2. Check shock absorbers and steering box for seepage or leaks; refill if required.
J. MISC
1. Fender pad.
2. Flashlightes and spare batteries.
3. Jack knife.
4. Cell phone and charger.
5. Road flares.
6. Tire chains or mud hooks.
7. Tool kit.
