V8-60 Crank Gear
A friend is restoring a Midget race car with a V8-60 motor. The crank in the V8 has a Model A transmission gear bolted to the end of the crank. These cars are an "in or out" affair as far as the drive line is concerned.
The gear on the crank is stripped and it is supposedly made from a Model A transmission gear, but which one? The gear is cut down with a special lathe tool for extremely hard metal. Does anyone know about this arrangement or know anyone who could possibly help us? Thanks so much, John Young, Alamo A's San Antonio.

Re: V8-60 Crank Gear
I don't know what was done --pictures would help, but if I was to use "A" trans parts I would think the input shaft, and 2-3 sliding gear would be what would work for an "in-out", it has no syncro, and has a male(input shaft) and female (2-3) gear like teeth that fit together ---you could look online at A parts houses for pictures ---one that wasn't good enough for a driving A should be good enough for your needs -2nd gear gets worn but the 3rd gear part rarely is damaged, the spline is close to the driveshaft size (probably fits as is), the input shaft probably was cut off and welded to a flange.

Re: V8-60 Crank Gear
That set up was probably built before some of the aftermarket stuff was available to drive an in/out gearbox. Kurt is most likely correct about the 2nd/3rd sliding gear being the best fit there.

Re: V8-60 Crank Gear
Before you go trying to make some one off part it might be easier to do a little online research. If you can identify the make of In-Out box you have, you can search the vintage racecar sites for individuals that deal in obsolete race car parts. There are a number of people that cater to this market. A simple wanted add or a phone contact usually develops in to a "call this guy or call this guy" and a good way to single out hard to get parts.

"Kurt in NJ" has it pretty well right. Both the male and female splines/ gears are from the model A trans. As you can see, it'll take a very friendly machinest to get you going. Dick has the right idea in that I'd bet there is a male gear set-up in some old racer's garage. Good luck. |
