Door Latch question on '36 Ford pickup....
HELLO....everyone has been very helpful with all my questions. THANK YOU for this....I now have another question.
I had bought all new Door Latches and Door Handles. I am probably missing (or not seeing something here). I installed the driver side Door Latch but when I went to install the Door Handle it would not fit into the "square" of the Latch (too much Chrome build-up on the Key-Stock portion). I have some 5/16" Key-Stock but when I insert it into the "square" of the Door Latch and put a crescent wrench to try to turn, it does not turn. Is the Door Handle key-stock supposed to go all the way through the Door Latch. PHOTO 001 piece with "square" hole does not turn (is it supposed to). PHOTO 003 piece with "square" hole does not turn (is it supposed to). Please see photos and hopefully they will help explain. Am I not understanding how these Latches are supposed to work. Thank you, Bruce in California Last edited by 1936 ford pickup; 08-15-2016 at 01:24 PM. |

Re: Door Latch question on '36 Ford pickup....
Original outside door handles have notches near the end. That is so it clears the inner mechanism when the handle is turned.Look at EBAY auction # 401167502935.Repo handles do not have those notches. You can make those notches with a file or grinder. The handle will move with a test by inserting the square shank in about 3/8" from the side portion of the latch that goes against the inner panel of the door(3rd pic).Clamping it in a vise helps.

The handles have ground notches that go where the angled square hole is.

THANK YOU for your reply's back.
I am going to purchase a "used" outside Door Handle to get at the key-stock portion to use as a template. Where I work we have an out of sight machine shop with all kinds of CNC equipment. Bruce in California |

Re: Door Latch question on '36 Ford pickup....
Another example, 36 pickup handle. This one is a little expensive to be a template, around $28 with shipping. It's not really needed. just hold the parts in position on the door and mark where the clearance is needed. As you can see there is a LOT of tolerance in this.

The arm from the latch to the inside handle is captured behind the window mechanism.
