65 Comets
Hi, first post to this section, I'm normally on the Flathead side. Anyone working on 65 Comets? I just got my baby back home! 65 Cyclone, highly modified. I actually built it for my son and he has had it for several years. He moved to a new location and doesn't have a place to store it, so it's back with me. Which is a good thing IMO, because it still needs some work finished up and he never had the time to work on it. I am currently working on the emergency brakes and had some questions.

Re: 65 Comets
I'm a huge fan of Mercury's. My first was 64 Marauder, then to 65 Park lane convertible, 67 Cyclone, 68 Montego MX Brougham 68 Monterey, 86 2dr Gran Marquis, 88 4 door and finally still driving 2005 Mariner. It's nice to have a Mercury in the garage. When ever I see an early Cyclone I think of Sach and sons, or Dyno Don.

Re: 65 Comets
As I posted, it is highly modified. Ford big block 460 engine coupled to a
C6 Stage 4 transmission, Gear Vendor unit and a 9 inch rear axle (4:56). It is set up for N2O, but haven't used it yet! And I know, way out of line for the site, but I'm some happy getting it back to play with that I couldn't resist. The interior is close to stock (except for the roll-bar and additional floor mounted gauges). Last edited by JSeery; 07-14-2021 at 08:01 PM. |

Re: 65 Comets
That's a lot of motor for that little lightweight body. An old friend had a Comet Caliente back in the day and it only had a high performance 289 but it would fly.

Re: 65 Comets
Yes it is. Should be in the 500 to 600 hp range on gas and pushing 900 on N2O. I need a little more confidence in the brakes right now to do much with it.

Re: 65 Comets
It's been some time since I've seen a picture of that car. It looks a bit well maintained, is it just me who noticed that most classic cars used BF Goodrich tires? Good luck with that project of yours.

Re: 65 Comets
It looks like it is just out of the paint shop.
Yes, it is more than welcome here but I won't be able to view the posts as like DOLLY PARTON, the sight of it makes me want to cry. I am assuming this is not a street car?

My current issue is trying to connect up the emergency brake. I found a source for the cable from the rear drums forward and the front cable up to the brake handle is there. I don't have the equalizer bar and rod that connects the two. A lot of searching has not turned up a source for these parts. So, I ordered 65 mustang parts and will attempt to use them. Was wondering is anyone knows what the differences would be? I assume it would be the length of the bar and maybe the curvature? Also can't find a photo of the original installation, which may or may not be helpful in my case, LOL. Attached photo is off the internet, just an example of the components I am referring to. Re: 65 Comets
Here is a picture of the trans cross member from my '65 fastback.
I would guess the cross member in your Cyclone is similar, unless you changed it when putting in the trans you are running. You can see the bracket, for the flat bar to slide into, on my cross member.

Re: 65 Comets
I like just about all Comets, but '65 is when they started looking really cool. Just like a fast muscle car is supposed to look, at least in two door form. Great clean lines. Love the 66 and 67 models, too. 64's are also very cool, but didn't have the stacked headlights, which I love. Thanks for the pics.

Re: 65 Comets
The Mustang stuff is likely similar. There may be length issues with the equalizer rod but that can be fabricated. The lever for the 65 mustang appears to be similar as long as the intermediate cable will connect. The equalizer set up components are generally centered above the drive shaft. Fairlane and Comet stuff should be pretty similar but you don't see a lot of this stuff in reproduction parts for the 65 models and there aren't as many wrecking yards that have stuff this old but there are likely a few still out there.
The Fairlanes only had a slight similarity in the body line for that year. The Comet body line made it look like a longer version of the Falcon Sprint but only from a side view. The tail is completely different. Last edited by rotorwrench; 07-15-2021 at 01:53 PM. |
