Flathead Oil Pan
Would someone on here that knows their oil pans please PM me their E-Mail address so I can send them some pictures of an 8BA oil pan I'm using but have no idea what it came off of. Also how much oil it holds. Thanks. Gary

It is easy to post a photo here. How else are we going to argue over what you have?

Gary.....I know that you DON'T do pictures here on the 'Barn (It's so simple. I'd be happy to send you a VERY concise "step-by-step"). If you would like to e-mail those pics to me, I'll be happy to post 'em here so a 'wider' audience can take a look, if you like. If you want the picture "tutoring", PM me. I've converted three or four previous "NO PICTURE" guys here in the past. Dick D [email protected] |

V8 Coopman. Thanks for the help. Explain why when someone posts pictures on the Barn nothing shows up and I have no way of seeing them?

Re: Flathead Oil Pan
Pan looks like in the 8BA family with an unfamiliar (to me) location and angle for the dipstick.

Re: Flathead Oil Pan
That's not an 8BA pan. All 8BA pans had a center sump. I believe it's a 52 - 53 Merc.

Re: Flathead Oil Pan
Have a '50 Merc. rear sump with the bracket and a '51 rear sump without the bracket.

Is this a mystery pan? Are you guys saying it won't fit my 8BA block? It sure looks like it will.

I believe it's gonna be a '53-ish Merc pan, like pic below! '49 thru EARLY '51 Mercs like this. DD |

Re: Flathead Oil Pan
Right on, DD.
To clarify, Gary you have a late Merc. pan and it will work on an 8BA block. Question: How many Fordbarners does it take to change an oil pan? |

Re: Flathead Oil Pan
All oil pans will fit all engines (8BA). It's the chassis it goes in that determines what it's configuration is.

Here's the LATE '51 WITHOUT the bracket. And BELOW is the inside of Gary's (Krylon32) pan with funny dipstick. DD |

Re: Flathead Oil Pan
Both '50 and '51 Merc's have windage trays. Not '49 only.

Re: Flathead Oil Pan
As stated 5qts. is normal but YOU can do some home work to determine if that works with the oil pan/dipstick combination that you have.
This can be done with water before any restoration work.

It's a 1953 F100 truck V8 flathead oil pan. One year only.

Re: Flathead Oil Pan
Yes, indeed, this picture of a '53 F100 and the location of the dipstick seem to verify that.

Re: Flathead Oil Pan
Me, I'd put the pan on the assembled engine, mount the engine in the chassis (with full weight), put 5 quarts of oil in it. Then you can see where the level is on the dipstick and mark the dipstick with a blunt chisel.
Now you know exactly where the oil level should be - in your car, at whatever angle it happens to end up in. |

I thought all truck pans had the big cleanout plate on the bottom?

Re: Flathead Oil Pan
I'm not questioning you guys but the sump on this pan is massive. But if it's from a truck could it possibly hold more than 5 quarts?

Re: Flathead Oil Pan
The '53 truck flathead engines had some unique parts, like the straddle-mounted bell housing, central front engine mount, '49 car-style wide belt water pumps and the full sump oil pan discussed above and correctly identified by '42merc.

Re: Flathead Oil Pan
My 53 Merc. EAC has no windage tray but a baffle around the oil pump. That is the part of the pan that is bumped out. Wow there is a lot of different pan configurations out there. Good luck Kube .
