Default Red hot exhaust pipe

We were flogging a 29 with a frozen clutch and a no-start situation. We fed the starter 12 volts and the engine would start, increase rpm and die. I was using my bare hand over the carb intake to help with the gas flow. this was working and the engine was warming up. After a minute or so of this " choking" procedure I noted the exhaust pipe at the manifold was beginning to glow red.
I quickly remove my hand.

We diagnosed the situation as a stuck open exhaust valve resulting with gas burning in the exhaust pipe. It cleared up shortly thereafter and ran well.

Was I damn lucky???

We pushed the car into a storage trailer for the winter.

Timing issue can cause the same thing. Also a bad intake gasket can do that.

Lucky ? I think you found the problem and probably didn't cause any damage. Thats a good thing. You didn't mention how you fixed the hung valve. I think many of these old critters have had hot manifolds over the decades.

Yeah, you were lucky, Clem. That's odd! Valves don't hang up for no reason, of course -- do you know why the valve hung up? Running too lean a mixture would also cause an over-heated exhaust pipe. Having a leaking gasket around the carbie would result in a too-lean condition -- or just mis-adjusting the mixture.

Clem, put a vacuum hose on it to check for restricted exhaust.

If the timing is retarded it will run extremely hot.

very lucky the gas did not explode due to a loose exhaust gasket. Car had run up till this summer. All too busy to do the exploration study work. Valve loosened up after the engine run. MMO added in heavy dose to the gas tank.

This crap gas we have to use these days will make valves stick. I always mix 4 ounces of MMO with each 10 gallons, and that helps a lot.

When I hear about a glowing manifold, the first thing I think of is late timing.

Well, I would have thought the same about the timing, but, he said he found the problem to a hung valve and fuel burning in the manifold. Now we hear about a loose manifold. Oh well.

No beeeerz . I miss wrote. The manifold to exhaust connection was not tight. On a backfire exhaust gas emitted from the joint. The redness showed in the exhaust pipe. Daytime operation

If the points gap is less than .018 eighteen thousants , it will have a retarding effect on the timing. Too little gap at the points causes the points to open later . Retarded timing reduces power and causes overheating .
