Engine identity
I was recently re-arranging some "stuff" in my shop, I pulled out an engine that I had acquired many years ago. The stampings on the engine are not anything that I'm familiar with; The bore is 3-3/16, heads are 59 AB, block has, E27722 M.. cast into the bell-housing, with a very faint 59 that is very hard to see a couple of inches below the casting numbers.
I would appreciate any help to identify the engine..

If your engine has this shelf, it is a 39' or 40' ford. Last edited by 39topless; 01-23-2016 at 12:01 AM. |

Re: Engine identity
There are some 59 engines with that shelf, and these were cast late war/post war, they had 59 on the bell but in my experience no A or B or anything after the 59. The ones I've seen and the one I have are 3 1/16". Could have easily been bored to 3 3/16" somewhen in the past though.
These 59 blocks have the shelf, 59A have no shelf. The shelf ran up to late war ish, 1942 end earlier had shelf, not just '39 and '40. Martin. |

Re: Engine identity
I also have one of these engines as discribeb by Scooder except mine was 3 3/16 when I got it and it has what appears to be a factory relief.

From my limited experience, I don't consider myself to be much of an engine person, I know that 59AB heads on an engine don't mean dedittely, however, the 59 cast onto the block does. The numbers cast onto the block,( E27722 M) have some significance, as to what it is, is the big question??

Re: Engine identity
I was just recalling an old junk yard man's use of the "pencil test" when trying to identify FH blocks. He said, "If you put a pencil on the shelf and it stays, it's probably a 39'-40'. If the pencil rolls off, it aint'."

Re: Engine identity
Is the bottom water hole round aswell? This is how mine are on the 59 block here.
The casting number E27722M, no idea, not sure anyone can decipher that. My engine has a very similar number. It is a 59 block, pencil ledge type. Late war or just post war. Not a 59A or later. Martin. |
