34 PU New project from an estate- all apart
Even found a photo of the original 'Hot Rod'. WHY would this previous owner take it apart? New engine is full of water?. Today with good weather painted chassis with gloss black urethene [single stage fast dry]. Look at the hydraulic master set up! Winter project now. When I saw the grill, I had to buy it. Newc

Re: 34 PU New project from an estate- all apart
Found photo of the Original 'Hot Rod' . Lots of chrome and 'STACKS' exhaust! Washington State, anyone remember this truck? Have the 'Stacks', should use again? Very Period! Why would a fellow take this apart, and scatter the parts? I'd just drive it, now it's a project. Can't quite read the plate. Newc

Dump the stacks . . . they always look cheesy to me. I liked them when I was about 13 . . . now, not so much.

Try contacting Al Drake in Portland. Also try posting on the HAMB.
The stacks might be cheesy... but will set the truck apart from the "velveeta" trucks you would otherwise see! |

Re: 34 PU New project from an estate- all apart
I must still be about 13, because I like the chrome stacks. I think they fit the character with the chrome grill shell and later front bumper. It has a great 50's shop truck vibe.

Re: 34 PU New project from an estate- all apart
Pretty sure I saw that truck at the Nationals in Yakama in the eighties (84/85) . but it had wires on it. I loved the stacks because it was done so cleanly. At the time I had a 36 Dodge pickup so the owner and I talked a bit .

I like the way it is in the picture also. Is the grille tilted back?…I'm not big on stacks but a healthy Flathead would sound real nice, coming out of up there!……. Mark

Re: 34 PU New project from an estate- all apart
Latest is a good 59A engine from a '37 Ford - [chev V8 now]. Ran the eng with a rebuilt dist from Charlie-he says Hi to all. Cleaned up the flywheel, and found a 10" diaphram P Plate new, also a Ford 10' nos disc. Warmed the disc to remove any moisture from time. Noticed the flywheel had wear from a 9.5" and a 10" disc. Also the '34 transmission had some clearance grinding in the bellhousing, for the 10"?? Hope it all clears when together. thoughts ?? Really want to get the chassis done this Winter, Painter has scheduled cab-et all for Dec. Newc

Re: 34 PU New project from an estate- all apart
Ok; Spent this week installing a 59ab with a '38 trans set up as an early V8. One belt and a '39 std generator [fan type]. Changing the belt will still require lifting the eng, even with the Mercury mount adapters. 10" clutch required the use of a '37 up [78] trans case. Next- new gas tank and better hydraulic lines and that setup. Body goes to painter in Dec. Newc

Newc,
Man that is coming along nicely! Thank you for the updates and pictures! Must be nice to start fresh like that and build up a car or truck! Lot of work but you can get to the items much better as you assembly things. Regards, Chris

I am loving this build too! Thanks for sharing it with us, and who doesn't love an old school hot rod? Kinda fun that you are bringing it back to the photo.

I had a 34 PU back in the early 60's. Had juice brakes on it when I got it, but I put the 59A in. Other than that the rest was stock. Had it for several years as my daily driver. Wish I had it back

Got some help today and finally put the cab on the chassis. A real bit of progress, and set up for the Winter work. The wood mount kit needed some fine tuning, but it worked. Don't expect those repro wood mounts to be perfect. Enjoy fellows -photos

Looking good!!! You might have to modify your cab blocks as you stated, but that's OK. My '34 is stock but it is "your truck" and do it the way you want. It is on its way to becoming, "you can drive and have fun!!!" Keep us updated and I enjoy your excitement!!!

Mounted radiator with the Drake Hose Kit. Set the fancy grill on for looks. Engine needed 5 washers on TOP of a MERC lift mount to clear for the fan belt [removal]. I even removed the crank guide bracket and used flat 'U' bolts for front spring. Installed the 'Quiet ride' Firewall pad- Very nice product, but needed some help. Installed the original cab wood- used 15 painted bolts and SHORTENED 12 of them for looks. Bolt ends protruding into passenger space [hazard]. Firewall parts next, engine has been tested a bit ago. Shocks ready to install. Thanks to the encouragement from followers. Expect to drive it this SUMMER! Newc Last edited by Newc; 01-19-2024 at 06:39 PM. |

Re: 34 PU New project from an estate- all apart
Saving OLD chrome-rusty back side. Grills, bumpers, ect always seem to have a POOR backside on chrome parts. This '34 PU grill was chromed in the '70's, brazed bottom edge, BUT the show surface is still good.
So it got wire brushed , cleaned off, and some derust magic applied. After drying; Sprayed with a good coat of bright silver enamel. REMEMBER to tape the holes before any of this is applied!!, even brushed into the open gill bars. I hope this grill lasts another 50yrs. I remember we always opened the grill bars [crimped shut] before working on a Ford grill. Drying in front of the stove. [Winter] Photo Newc |
